UA MEPN 2020

U.S.A. Arizona

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I'm considering MEPN application to the UofA next year. I've been in touch with the advisor, Chris Sogge, for the past 3 years. I have a B.S. in Computer Science and a M.Sc. in Biology from Canada . Chris said that I need a pre-req GPA of 3.7 at least to get into the program; mine is 3.3. Do I stand any chances? Did anyone get in with lower pre-req grades? I'm trying to juggle pre-req taking with a toddler. Thanks so much for your advice!

Marina.

Hello everyone. My name is Leila. I will be joining the MEPN 2021 Cohort this Summer. I recall a few 2020 MEPN students mentioning that after Level 1 we can obtain a job as a Medical Assistant (MA), while completing the program. Does anyone have additional information on how that works? I noticed MA jobs at Banner require a CNA certification.

I never heard that... you can likely get a job as a nursing assistant though. I know current students have that job.
Arizona however from when I last checked doesn't legally require MAs to have CNAs, but Banner may prefer it.

Hello! I think what you might be referring to is Patient Care Tech jobs. After level one I applied for per diem positions at several hospitals and it has been amazing for me to get more experience and to see what hospital/unit I might want to or might not want to work for. I actually have an interview tomorrow for one at another hospital I think I might want to work at LOL. I would highly recommend doing it if possible. Different hospitals require you to work different number a days a month. I think St Joes is one day and TMC is 3 days a month but you get to choose which days so you can do it on the weekend if needed when you don't know your school scdeule yet. I know a lot of the hospitals are now not requiring any licensure or previous experience and will train you so it might not matter if you've even completed level 1 yet or not although level 1 was the hardest for me so I wouldn't recommend working during it if possible.

^ yes. Jeanette is right. For the position you must have completed level one (foundations in nursing) for them to hire you outside of getting your MA license or going to a vocational school for PCTs.

Thank you so much for this information! Did you have a certification prior to applying for your Patient Care Tech job? When you applied did you have a specific point of contact or did you simply Google per diem jobs and applied for what was available? I'm definitely interested :).

Hi everyone. I was just accepted into the MEPN 2022 program.
Also has anyone moved on to any nurse practitioner programs from this mepn program. If so what route did you take and any tips or guidance?
Thanks everyone!
