I am relatively new to this site/forum, but you all seem friendly and knowledgeable. I am graduating in May with a BSN, have some work experience in a hospital, and participated in an externship over the summer. I would dearly love to get out of this heat and live in NYC. I was looking on the NYPH website, and they suggested new grads apply in late Jan. which I plan to do. Are other hospitals this way? Should I apply to as many as early as possible? Also, am I expected to do in person interviews? I kind of suppose that I am, but how to I manage this when I live in TX (bleh)? If anybody has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!
Also, are some hospitals more likely to hire new grads than others? If it helps, I would like to work in Med/Surg, (weird, I know, but I want the experience, and I kind of enjoy it), Step Down, or maybe psych. NO kids, please. I also love love love public health.

I wish I could move to NYC. i am in miami, FL and it's very suburbs-- nothing fancy like what they show on TV. I wonder if NYC is the same, but it looks awesome--
anyways, I think that you can get hired anywhere. once you have your license for NY, you should be able to get a job whereever you wanted.

They show lots of high rises and such (I'm not sure which shows you were referring to) but there are many different neighborhoods all over the NYC area and they look very different depending on where you are.
From slums to high rises to townhouses & brownstones to suburbs. New York City is a great place- you are only limited to what you can afford.

New grads are finding it VERY difficult to land specialty positions, such as ICU, PICU, NICU, L&D etc....here at NYP. We just had a huge influx of new grads, after which HR has frozen the hire of most new grads into specialty units. I would call the recruiter and speak to someone directly.
Thanks to everyone for the advice/comments! I guess it's a good thing that I actually would prefer to do Med/Surg. Which NYP? Cornell?
Anybody have any thought about HHC? I guess Bellevue more specifically...

You and I are in the same boat. NYC changed my life..my grandma took me there for my 21st birthday. I was on the pre-med track, but after NYC I thought, I don't want to spend my 20s in the books acquiring 6 figure debt, I want to be in NYC being young and single and broke and adventurous! First thing I did after coming back to TX was apply to accelerated BSN programs, and I graduate in August '09. :)
Anyway, I have heard there is no shortage for new grads in NYC. I think this comes from people who want a NICU position at Columbia..but if you are willing to take a generally less desirable floor at a generally less desirable hospital like I am..I think you'll be just fine.
Anyway, good luck, and follow your dream! I am right behind ya!
