TWU vs UTh

Published

To who ever reads this,

Im working on my pre-reqs now and plan to apply for TWU and UT in Houston. However, I feel that only applying to 2 places isn't a good idea, but, I am not sure where else to apply to. I want to stay in Houston and get a BSN in Houston, (currently at HCC).

Also, I hope to transfer (if I get accepted) by next spring 2012. (so in about a year). I am planning to study for the HESI starting at the end of December and taking it next spring 2011. And during spring 2011, I will work on my applications.

I also would like to know if I need to get any shots. For some reason, both UT in Houston and TWU did not have a note about shots required in order to transfer to their schools for a BSN.

Thank You for reading this,

Sue

Hi Sue,

TWU currently requires the TEAS exam - not the HESI. Information about the exam is available on the TWU Nursing website - http://www.twu.edu/nursing/bs-entrance-exam.asp. The exam is required for both Houston and Dallas.

You will only need to worry about immunizations once you are accepted to the program. You don't need to show proof before you apply to the program.

Hope this helps.

RadioSue29,

I applied to both UT-H and TWU for Fall 2011 admission, and I also completed my prerequisite classes at HCC. I found out today I was accepted to UT-H and I'm still waiting to hear from TWU.

If your GPA and HESI/TEAS scores are high enough, you should be fine applying to just those schools. By high enough, I mean science, nursing, and undergrad GPA > 3.0 and HESI/TEAS scores > 90%. Other local nursing schools are Prairie View A&M and UTMB in Galveston.

My only advice is wait to take the HESI/TEAS until after you've completed your science classes, and more specifically, after you've completed A&P 1 and A&P 2.

Feel free to reply here or PM me if you have any other questions. Best of luck to you!

You sould definitely look into HBU as well.

The only immunization you should worry about now is the Hepatitis B, and that's because the series takes 6 months to complete.

Can HCC"s HESI test be sent to both UTh and TWU? I heard about a rumor were each school has a different HESI.

The Hep B immunization is required at all nursing schools isn't it? When I looked in HBU, I couldn't find any thing of the sort.

Only UTH uses the HESI, and the test is specifically for UTH. When you register for the HESI, it will ask you which school you're applying to, and the test is made specifically for that school. I was not aware that HCC had a HESI requirement, but no, you can't send the HCC scores to UTH. Here is the UTH link for the HESI: http://son.uth.tmc.edu/prospstudent/bsn/hesi.htm

TWU requires the TEAS V exam. So if you're applying to UTH and TWU, you will have to take 2 different tests. You might have to take another different test, the NET, if you apply to a school that doesn't use the HESI or TEAS V.

That's weird, I emailed a counselor about sending the HESI scores from HCC to UTh about that and UTh told me it is okay.

Then definitely go by what UTH says. I know I could have sent my UTH HESI scores to Baylor if I had applied there, but I was under the assumption UTH wanted their specific HESI.

Oooh, BU... I used to go there for my first year but what killed me was the financial stuff... Good Luck. You'll need it...

Oh, I'm not going to Baylor. It was too expensive. I'm starting UTH this fall.

Ah okay then. Congrats on getting in! :)

Since you probably had taken the Evolve's HESI, do you have any idea what kind of questions the A/P portion will be? Do you remember if there are questions that needed to know diseases that are usually in the boxes in the text book for "interesting things to know in clinical diseases," for example, sickle cells or HIVs. Also, what tips do you recommend about vocabulary? The ones they give out in the Evolve guide are way too easy... So I feel that there's a catch.
