To who ever reads this,
Im working on my pre-reqs now and plan to apply for TWU and UT in Houston. However, I feel that only applying to 2 places isn't a good idea, but, I am not sure where else to apply to. I want to stay in Houston and get a BSN in Houston, (currently at HCC).
Also, I hope to transfer (if I get accepted) by next spring 2012. (so in about a year). I am planning to study for the HESI starting at the end of December and taking it next spring 2011. And during spring 2011, I will work on my applications.
I also would like to know if I need to get any shots. For some reason, both UT in Houston and TWU did not have a note about shots required in order to transfer to their schools for a BSN.
Thank You for reading this,
Sue
Hi, thanks so much for the information about Prairie View. I've done more research into UT-H, TWU, and A&M College Station rather than any of the other schools. My ultimate goal is to work with pediatric oncology patients and I would like to get my masters as a pediatric nurse pratitioner, so I have a long way to go, but I really want to make the best choice as far as a school goes. It's been a huge debate for me because it's roughly a 2 hr drive each way from where we live to get downtown, so the commute is just horrible. But I am really drawn to being able to go to school in the medical center. But at this rate I'm taking every course I need to apply to every school I can get my hands on that way I know that I may at very least get accepted somewhere.
How is the parking for Prairie View? Everything I saw about UT's parking is that it's horrible and very expensive.
Thanks again!

PV has a garage, and we share with UT's Med Students. The price for parking depends on when you buy it; we pay around $144 (or something like that around August) for the year which is $12/mo (rather than pay the $10/day in the medical center). Our garage and school are the same building, and there's no shortage of spots; the elevators can be a bit annoying since it seems like only one works at a time.
Well that definitely seems like a better deal than UT's parking. I had looked at their website and it seems like all of the parking garages that are close to the nursing building have extremely odd hours of when you can park and the only 24 hour garages are way on the other side of the medical center and you have to take a shuttle. On top of that I'm not going to pay a parking fee for the semester and then have to pay $11 a day to park in the garage because the hours that I'm at the school don't coincide with the hours that the parking passes are available for.
I know that TWU's website said that you can buy contract parking with the hospital across the street, which is much more convenient.
Thanks again for the information!

Prairie View's CON is across the street from UTHSC's Medical School on Fannin -- not quite downtown yet, and the Metro Rail goes down the middle. It's down the street from TWU and caddy corner-ish to Methodist.
There are a lot of horror stories about Prairie View, which put me off from the school for a while. I went to another nursing program, hated it, came home, applied to PV, and I've been enjoying it since. I know people who have had a terrible time at PV, and maybe if I went to PV from the get go, I'd feel the same way, but I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be. A lot of the grievances that people have with the school, for the most part, I think you can find that in any other program, and it was worse in my opinion at the previous program.
You're left to teach yourself a lot of the material, but compared the previous program I was at (where you taught yourself...everything time infinity), it's a lot better. PV has the lowest GPA requirement out of the three BSN programs in the medical center, but they have most loops to jump through.
I've liked most of my teachers so far, with the exception of maybe one or two. Some of the teachers who are, I guess a "nightmare," if you get on their good sides, they're a wonderful asset to have, especially with jobs, or so I've been told.
