Starting this for anyone thinking about applying to Texas Women's University's Nursing program for Spring 2019. Even though it seems like a long time from now it's never too early to start preparing to apply:happy:
Is anyone else prepping for the TEAS or has already taken it?
To those who did well on reading and science: how did y'all study for it? My reading score came out pretty low and I'm surprised because I didn't think I had to worry about it!! And my science score was average :/Just in case I might have to retake the teas LOL
I didn't get over 90 on my reading and science but I took it three times and definitely saw improvement in these sections. Reading I practiced a lot. I went to the nearest bookstore with a cafe and tried to take all the practice exams from different publishers they had available. For science I went off of ATI's manual of what to know and supplemented that with the Kaplan TEAS book. Like reading, I took as much practice exams as I could from the bookstore.
Definitely buying practice A & B from ATI also helped. I don't know if I can say this...but a tip for the practice exams is to take screen shots as you go along! You can only take each exam twice and they don't let you review what you got wrong after.
How it's set up: answer one question then they tell you if you got it right or wrong. Then the next question appears and so on. For me, I found that it was very annoying because I paid so much for the practice exams but couldn't review it whenever I wanted after completing the practice.
Really hope this helps!!
Thanks for taking time to share that!! I focused most of my time on science and writing. I didn't think I needed to study for reading since i thought it was so basic :/
I did get the a&b practice exams and thought that was very annoying as well. Especially how you can't even choose which section you want to practice on and once you move on to the next portion you can't go back
Yes! What I found that helped me a lot was using up all the time allotted on each section. I never completed the section before the clock ran out. I reviewed each question, even if I thought it was an easy question. And then taking a short bathroom break between each section also really helped!
Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and I am applying to TWU Houston campus. My stats aren't that great, but I hope that the Spring semester isn't as competitive s the fall like most schools.
Nursing Core GPA: 3.36
Pre-Req GPA: 3.67
TEAS Overall: 82.7
Reading: 80.9
Math: 93.8
Science: 78.7
Language: 75.0
Admission score: 31.33 which is pretty low, but with the lowest score being a 39 in the fall in Houston I'm hoping I still make the cut..
Goodluck to everyone!

I hope this is not too late!!
What worked for me:
If you can only buy one book I would recommend the ATI TEAS Study Manual and if you can get the package that includes Practice Tests Form A and B then that's even a plus. Maybe find a friend/classmate also studying for the TEAS to split the costs because you can take each test twice. But I agree not being able to review the questions that you paid so much for is extremely annoying!
[sCIENCE]
Read the study manual cover to cover! As I was reading, I found it extremely helpful for me to make google docs of each topic in science (especially each body systems and life science sections). I put the info from the ATI study manual and other resources I could get my hands on in these google docs but again using the ATI study manual as the skeleton or outline! I needed this personally because it's been 2 years since I took A&P.
Take as many practice questions as you can! As I was reviewing these google docs for the concepts and the foundations, I started taking practice tests from McGraw Hill which I found to be most similar to the TEAS science portion with some discrepancies.
Review every question missed! At first I couldn't tell if I was just reviewing missed questions and just memorizing the answers or if I really understood the concept behind it. So I think a big game changer (1st attempt: 83%; 2nd attempt to 93.6%) was when I made conscious effort to go back to my notes and review all the concepts related to the question I missed. So like if the question asked, "What hormone is released from the pituitary that causes uterine contractions?" Answer being oxytocin, then I studied all the hormones released from the pituitary (ex. mnemonic FLAT PEG - function and site of release) and all hormones related to the female reproductive system (estrogen and progesterone and their functions and what organ they are released from.
Watch videos on youtube! If there was a topic I still couldn't seem to get down, I turned to youtube videos by Khan Academy!
[READING] I really didn't know how to logically study for this section other than practice. All I can say is that time is your friend. I agree that you should take all the time they give you and go back the second time to make sure you didn't misread any simple questions and carelessly answer incorrectly because that was the pattern I was seeing for myself (1st attempt: 83%; 2nd attempt: 89.4%).
Hi everyone! I applied for TWU Spring 2019. Below are my stats:Nursing Core GPA: 4.00
Pre-Req GPA: 3.83
TEAS: 84.0%
- Reading: 72.3%
- Math: 90.6%
- Science: 91.5%
- English: 79.2%
Admission Score: 45.87
My stats are not the best but I wish the best of luck to everyone!!
I have no prior degree or TWU preference!
