TWU Spring 2014 Applicants

Published

Hey everyone. I just wanted to start a thread for all of those hoping to get into TWU starting Spring 2014. My name is Kia and I have already sent in my application and completed my TEAS V exam. I'll be in the Denton campus patho class this fall (trying to wait patiently for an acceptance letter-GOD willing).

I was thinking about that too. I dun think they told us the orientation date yet?

The nursing office said they will send us another email coming all that info and a packet soon so look out for that

HI, All...2014 Houston TWU Nursing accepted.

Stats are: 3.8, 4/4, 98% TEAS, BSPB

Facebook Page???

Super stoked. Didn't apply anywhere else.

Ok.. I typed in the FB group just as it was put in this thread and it still won't come up. I see that there is a group for class of 2015 but it shows people were added 6 months ago or more so I assume that's the group that started this fall. Someone please help. :(

I used the link on this page to find it, but facebook had to confirm that I have a TWU email address since it is a group within TWU. Then once you do that you should be able to request to join. Hopefully that still works for you. I think it's causing problems for a lot of people because there are only a few of us in the group so far

Hey everyone - I just wanted to take a minute and introduce myself. I am a currently a Junior 2 student at TWU Houston, meaning I was in your shoes a year ago (I started classes in January of 2013).

As I have survived the first semester and half way to the end of my second (no summer school for us), I thought I would chime in and offer to answer any questions you may have. I don't know if there is any other TWU-Hou students already doing this or not, but every perspective is helpful.

Anyway, here as it looks like acceptance letters have already gone out (CONGRATS!!), here is a little information on what to expect.

(1) There really are like 3 orientation days you are supposed to attend. Usually one in December, and two right before classes.

(2) If you have the information for your BON background checks (aka blue card) - DO IT NOW! If you don't have that information yet, DO IT ASAP. Seriously, every semester a couple of students is held back a semester because they had some stupid something from when they were younger - BON takes things seriously (even misdemeanors from when you were 15). It takes time for things to get cleared up, so start early.

(3) You will get an option in Dec to buy everything you need on campus and sign up for CPR. I would recommend signing up for CPR as it is done by a student group on campus - so you can ask your nursing student instructors questions before/after class. Also your cert is good for 2 years, which is when you should graduate anyway. And your CPR instructors are kinda awesome.

You will get a set schedule, every Junior 1 class has it. Monday (all day, like 8-5), Tuesday (4-7), Friday is 8-12 (unless you already have taken Patho). Then clinical/lab is two more days on Tues, Wed, Thurs or Sat - no you don't get to pick, yes they are mandatory. You will find out your clinical/lab schedule in January - so don't freak out yet.

Past that - what do you want to know?

Thanks for all your help! Do you remember when the December orientation was last year? I have travel plans in December and I'm hoping it doesn't interfere... Thanks!

Also do you have any tips for finding housing and possibly roommates around the school? I'm new to Houston, so any advice helps!

thank you for all this valuable information. First thing I will like to ask is can you provide the link to the BON blue card? Secondly, hypothetically what happens if i failed 1 or 2 classes? do i get to make up for it during summer since you mention there is no summer school. Any tips on how are you studying for this course load? Looking at the last paragraph, these clinical days are they set in one hospital or multiple? Do they all happen in day shifts or night shift maybe both? How are the test to some of these classes like? Is it very important to buy ALL books??? I know its a lot of questions and I thank you in advance if you are able to answered all of them or even some.

-Thanks

Orientation is typically scheduled right before finals – so that means about the first week of December.

Finding roommate/housing – sorry no idea there. I will ask around to a couple of people that moved here for school.

BON backgrounds should come in the next package of material or email. Give yourself at a few weeks to get a response from the BON.

Failing a class may be one for the worst things you can do. Here is the policy (in place today) as I understand it. You are allowed to fail 1 class during the entire program – 2 failures (collectively) during the program and you are out of the program regardless of when the failures happen. Also a failure is a final grade below 72 (but they may up it to 75).

Studying – all depends on what works for you, there is no silver bullet.

Clinical days for J1 semester – you start with 2 lab days, and about mid-semester you will start clinical rotations and one of those days will turn to hospital days. Your hospital days will start at 6:30 and run to about 3, you will only go to one hospital during the semester. You also find out which days you have lab/clinical and which hospital you will be at in January.

Tests will vary by course – all 4 are different.

Books – depends on who you ask, talk to you mentor (meet then at orientation in January) and the CPR instructors if you take the CPR class on campus.

Also, this is something I forgot to mention earlier. As you have time now, go ahead and make an appointment with your doctor’s office to get your titers to prove immunity. You will need titers not just shot records for:

MMR

Hep B

Varicella

Go ahead and get your flu shot (annual) and TB (TB is good for 1 year).

You will also need to get an antibody test to show you don’t have Hep C (yes, it is a new requirement).

Oh wow! Thanks so much for all this info!!!

Also, FOR THOSE ADMITTED TO HOUSTON, would you guys like to redo a NEW Facebook page, due to the fact that it is under TWU groups. Maybe do one that is OUTSIDE of the school groups.

Thanks again for the information. I am not sure if you have any kids but for clinical days, would you happen to know any where that offers before-school care that early?

Another question, the times for the classes that you previously posted, will they remain the same for the incoming students or does it differ over the courses of semesters?

Search "TWU Houston Nursing Class of Dec 2015". This new page does NOT require you to verify your TWU email.

This may be a silly question but I'd rather be safe.. Does anyone know if traffic violations count against you? I believe I have two traffic tickets on my record so I'm not sure if I should be concerned with those or not?!
