TWU NPs or RN-MS students networking?

Published

I just finished adv patho online for my RN-MS. Now I'm registering for online leadership & mgmt. I've been searching for a thread or facebook page where online TWU NP and RN-MS students share experiences, advice, wisdom, support, etc. the way everyone easily does on campus. Online classes are great except for the isolation! So does anyone know where TWU NP students network? If not, let's make a place and spread the word!

I'm curious about something...If you are accepted to a certain campus but a class you need is not offered at your campus a particular semester, can you take it through another campus, especially if its online?

I have in the RN-MS program , but so far I've had to have my adviser register me because Webadviser doesn't always recognize that I am eligible to register for graduate classes, so I don't know if you can do it on your own, or have to request it.

I am a Denton FNP student, and I took Patho online out of Houston. My understanding is that you have to have a pretty good reason (ie long distance from campus) and it's on a space-available basis - ie, "home campus" students get first available seats.

I also think they really want you to stick with your cohort as much as possible. In Adv. Practice Role you come to campus twice during the semester and the group dynamic sets in, and it starts to feel like you are part of something. I took Adv Assessment this spring, and we had class twice a month. I really loved interacting with the professors and getting to know the other students, since I have been taking my core (all online) courses part-time over the past 2 years!

Welcome!

Kat5 are there classes that require you to meet weekly? I got accepted for FNP @ Denton campus, but found out I was pregnant after applying. I'm due in Dec so trying to figure out if it's even feasible for me to start in the fall. Which ones are the "lighter load" classes?

In general, I have taken MSN courses online through Denton, Dallas and Houston depending on where it was available and it's never been an issue. But, I have seen on some FNP courses it says "Denton students only". I would imagine once you are past the core courses, it's preferable to take NP courses at your home campus unless it is completely online without a lab or clinical.

And, LubbockNP/TorresFNP2b...I'm a Tech (BSN) grad too :)

Congrats, missdeevah! So exciting! The first 20 hours or so are online, so I think you would be fine unless baby comes early =). Up till now, I have deliberately only taken 1 class a semester so I could still have a life outside of school, and it has been very doable. I think most people take Theory or Research first. All of the core courses have online group projects/papers/presentations, which are very time consuming (give me a test any day!), but not extraordinarily hard, if you can write a coherent sentence and can do APA in your sleep!

This fall I start my first clinical course (FHN1). The classroom component is still only twice a month, but I have heard from classmates ahead of me that for every 8 hours you do in clinical (90 hours in FHN1&2, 135 in FHN3, and 270 hours in the final semester), you have about 4 hours of paperwork, and the volume of material for each exam is overwhelming. I work part-time, have pretty self-sufficient kids, a supportive husband, and a very flexible schedule, but I am still a little worried being able to keep up. But I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I am excited to finally get to see patients in this new role, so that's what keeps me going!

Thanks so much 3wishes for responding. Today is the first day of class and I am so nervous.

You're welcome! I checked my summer Leadership and Mgmt. Blackboard last week and people had posted the first assignment May 22! It's due June 5th, but now I already feel behind! All of the assignments are up and could technically have been completed before the 1st day of class (today).:wideyed:

I'm glad i found this thread. I too will be starting the NP program at TWU this fall. I just spoke with someone in the office and was told that everyone has to take Theory and Adv. Patho their first semester. Is this true? and if so can someone please send me a sample syllabus from previous semester? I am trying not to freak out about taking patho my first semester.

Hi! I took adv patho by itself, but that pushes back my grad date. You can look at a 2012 syllabus from the class I took this spring by googling Texas Woman's University BIOL 5333.31 Advanced Pathophysiology. The presentations are 2 group online powerpoints. Not that much reading of the text, but tons of searching for research articles for the blackboard discussions, PP and essay exams. HTH![h=3][/h]

Thank you 3wishes! I appreciate it.

Did you take it in houston or dallas?

First they registered me for Parkland on campus. I pointed out that I wanted it online and the only one that semester was out of Houston, so they registered me for Houston. Denton is my "home" campus.

Hey 3wishes,

I believe that I am taking the instructor that you had in Houston. Our assignments sound so much alike. Is she a tough grader. I am a little nervous because I don't know how she grades. How should I prepare for the exams. We just finished our presentation and I am so happy to have that behind me. Any advice would help.

Thanks
