TWU Houston Fall 2009

Published

I could not for the life of me find a thread for people who were going to be going to Houston in the fall, so here we go.

I was going out for the fast track 2009 in Dallas, got denied and put back in the fall applicant pool, then BAM:D, got hit with the shocker last night when I got home from work that I had been accepted to the regular BSN program in Houston.

I'm really excited to start a new chapter and I thought this would be a good way to meet other members of the class before we get there. So shout out where you're from and your background so we can all get to know each other before August!

(P.S.- I've also been accepted to the community college in my hometown, which is closer, cheaper, and probably going to be easier, but I think it would be borderline offensive to turn down such an awesome offer, let me know what you think)

I can't wait to meet yall next month :). Is there a attendance rule for lecture?? I'm sure there is one for clinicals

oh yeah, for clinicals they only accept a few reasons to miss such as sick, death, & things along that nature. it is up to your clinical instructor on weather or not they will let you make it up and you can't have an unexcused absence or you fail. don't miss unless you seriously CAN'T be there.

Ok just wanna make sure I would be ok at night. Is their a fridge or anything u can keep ur lunch when school starts?? Did u find a rolling backpack a good idea?

yes there are a couple of fridges (3rd floor, 6, & 8) and one big freezer on the 8th floor.

Specializes in NICU.

What about the rolling backpack and is their a fridge for ur lunch?

littlerae..how are the professors there.. I heard that some of them the first semester don't care about whether you learn or not because they are trying to weed out students..also, I heard that out of 120 students starting only like 65 graduate..Is this true?

rolling bag definately a good idea if you are bringing a laptop or books. they get heavy. also, professors are great and especially all of the ones for the first semester. later there are some I could do without, but nothing bad. they aren't trying to weed people out it just kind of happens. a lot of people don't make it through assessment and that's where you tend to loose a lot of people first semester. if you can make it through assessment then you should do just fine. stay on top of that class and don't fall behind. as far as 120 starting and only 65 graduating i'm gonna have to say that's not true. i don't think they even accept 120 people to start off with anyway.

Oh..okay..thanks..I just heard that from previous students..

What type of practice does TWU offer to prepare you for the NCLEX? Do they require you to purchase study guides for each course? And do they test you with practice questions at the end of each semester?

senior 2 semester is focused more on NCLEX and the highly recommend that you buy a book but don't require it. also, as far as each course all of the test are designed to prepare you for the types of questions you will be asked. if you look at a NCLEX book you will have an idea of the the types of questions on the tests at TWU.

What semester are you in littlerae?

Also, do you know if any hospitals in the surrounding areas have work programs for nursing students?

I am currently a senior 1 and tomorrow is my last day of clinicals :) right now no one is hiring for anything. usually MD Anderson and the VA have work programs that I know of but i'm sure they all have something.

WoW..thats exciting..last day of clinicals..

How big are the classes at TWU? Do you feel that you get one on one attention from the professors?

By the way..thanks for answering all of my questions!

you get one on one if you make a point to meet the professors so that they know who you are. my current classes are about 70 people I guess.

I heard of some nursing schools that divide students into smaller groups for clinicials and then you work with them throughout the year. Does this apply for TWU?
