I could not for the life of me find a thread for people who were going to be going to Houston in the fall, so here we go.
I was going out for the fast track 2009 in Dallas, got denied and put back in the fall applicant pool, then BAM:D, got hit with the shocker last night when I got home from work that I had been accepted to the regular BSN program in Houston.
I'm really excited to start a new chapter and I thought this would be a good way to meet other members of the class before we get there. So shout out where you're from and your background so we can all get to know each other before August!
(P.S.- I've also been accepted to the community college in my hometown, which is closer, cheaper, and probably going to be easier, but I think it would be borderline offensive to turn down such an awesome offer, let me know what you think)
Assessment is the class where they teach you how to do a head to toe assessment of someone. like assess skin, head, eyes, etc. (every part of the body). if you can take patho this summer then I would. your first semester consists of the following classes: assessment, pharm, patho, concepts. the only class i read for was assessment. also, the houston campus offers maymester classes too which is only 1 week. you can take a woman's multicultural class which will count as your nursing elective as long as the course starts w/NURS. this will be an easy A for you and will take some pressure off of you during your Senior I semester.
for pharm we recieved an outline of the lecture and we filled in the notes as we went. that is all i studied for that class. as far as the package deal, the school didn't offer that for us or any other class that I have heard of. the only books you need is a drug book, a good care plan book, and the assessment book for your first semester.
For junior 2 you will be taking women's health, aging, adult I, groups, and research. you will need the groups and research book for sure. for the other 2 classes i didn't read for them. the woman's book came with a small pocket book which is what i read to help clarify some things. you will continue to use the drug book and the careplan book so when you buy one make sure it is a good one. i don't like the one they tell you to buy so I went out and found a good one. i have been able to use it for all of my classes and it has made writing care plans a breeze. i highly suggest it or at least one like it b/c i have been able to use it for women's, adult care, and peds.
littlerae26, thanks for joining us. please enlighten us! we desperately need that. i have a question regarding criminal back ground check. will they ask for your fingerprints or it is just like a normal procedure which you submitt a form and they take of the rest? no... i'm not a criminal! the reason i ask is i'm going to hong kong to visit my parents soon. i don't know if i have to be physically present in the us to finish the back ground check. since you have been through the process, please give me some insights on this and i will much appreciated your help.
princess... i'm sorry to hear that but i am glad you at least get it done.

for the first semester the only book you really need is assessment. don't waste your money on any of the other ones. also, don't buy from majors unless you have already priced online and it is the same. assessment and patho are the 2 classes that will be the most time consuming. read every thing they tell you to for assessment but don't worry about any of the rest of them because you won't have time for it or at least I didn't. for patho study the notes and know them well. the class that most people fail the first semester is assessment so be sure you know your stuff. for assessment you need to pay attention in lecture, read the book, and the study guide is helpful to give you an idea for test questions. let me know if I didn't answer something.
