TWU Fall 2010

Published

Is anyone out there applying to TWU for the Fall of 2010? I got this idea from a previous thread and thought I should get one started for this semester, so that we can help each other and communicate with each other?

I have taken the Hesi-A2 and got a 74.8 on it so they didn't even look at my application. I live on campus so any help or information I can give just let me know. I'm excited and feel good about this deadline.

Good luck and I look forward to meeting you!

Can someone please explain to me why epithelial proliferation in AGN and RPGN causes glomerular destruction? I understand the A&P of the glomerulus, but I don't see how more epithelium/podocytes causes GBM damage.

Is it because with epithelial proliferation you also have more anti-GBM immune complexes?

Thanks

If we're not in the Houston Undergrads, is there another place to find what books we need? I tried looking through WebAdvisor, but nothing...

hey ryan,

good question! i found this on wikipedia and backed it up with our text book (page 676, top of 2nd column):

histopathology: the majority of glomeruli present "crescents". formation of crescents is initiated by passage of fibrin into the bowman space as a result of increased permeability of glomerular basement membrane. fibrin stimulates the proliferation of parietal cells of bowman capsule, and an influx of monocytes. rapid growing and fibrosis of crescents compresses the capillary loops and decreases the bowman space which leads to renal failure within weeks or months.

it seems that in rpgn, the lesions that are formed grow in size (because of epithelial proliferation and fibrin deposition). the increased growth blocks the capillary loops and leads to renal failure.

hope this helps

Oh well that makes sense. I didn't think of the outwards direction (epithelium -> capsule) I was thinking of towards the inside (epithelium -> GBM)

THANKS!

The book also states that in AGN:

Berger disease (a type of GN) has respiratory and gastrointestinal viral infection triggers that release IgA. Complement is activated and inflammatory cells are released causing glomerular damage. (page 676 bottom left column)

No problem! Finding answers to questions helps me learn too

anyone else see the new course on Blackboard?

Yup...I have it.

umm...OMG!!! So, I knew that we were accepted into the program. Patho was to get my feet wet. I am excited but after reading that 23 page syllabus, I am exhausted! I believe I am experiencing the clinical manifestations of anxiety:uhoh3:

FYI- you WILL need your scrubs for NRS 3614. Not being in scrubs affects your grade drastically! Not sure if this means they are needed on the first day but as thorough as the syllabus is...it seems like not needing them would have been stated.

I'm confused about what books to get... Do we just order the books that were posted by Barbara, and that's it? ....

And.. can we have maroon scrubs?

Baulder's books are just for concepts. On Blackboard, we have another set of books listed for assessment. Then we'll need the pharm books...

After reading more...scrubs are required the first day!
