TVCC HAS CHANGED THEIR 2013 BROCHURE ON THEIR WEBSITE THE problem is that the tvcc counselors gave out a list of honors classes for the students to pick from so that they could recieve an extra point AND the problem is that some of those honors classes to pick from on that list are not part of their new 2013 class requirement guidlines and alot of students have already taken those honors classes not required some have gotten lucky and taken the humanities fine arts honors class but some have taken other honors classes not required and are now out of the time and money they spent on that class. THE OTHER PROBLEM is that not every one is interested in getting a bachelors degree alot of people i talk to are interested in obtaining their associates degree in RN. so why penalize the people just wanting an associates by making them take all of those extra classes just for an associates degree not a BSN they should have an option. but i was reading and i noticed that tvcc teamed up with the universities to make the students be forced to take the additional classes towards their bsn so that way the school can get more money from students spending on more classes and books it seems a little crooked if you ask me. it looks like tvcc will now only be enrolling more students interested in a BSN rather than having students interested in a ADN....... or is this just a way to weed out alot of their applicants ?????? makes you say and think HHHHMM ????????
Wow i cant wait to get peoples opinions on this one

i think it is a good idea. it appears that alot of hospitals are wanting BSN degrees for different reasons. tvcc recommending these classes will help ensure career success in the students attending. If the allowed just the ADN and jobs want, require, or prefer BSN tvcc students would not be "prepared" for the work force. this would probably lead to more students looking for work in other fields, therefore, wasting time put into their ADN. Although, i understand the frustration behind the sudden change I have to say I agree with TVCC and their admission change.
in nurseing hospital jobs are not the only jobs available they now have rn jobs in mail order pharmacies, health insurance companies, schools, travel rn's state inspection rn's and this list goes on all requireing just associates degrees in registered nursing from a reputable school look it up your self on careerbuilder.com and even more rn position will be coming outside of the hospital now with the new obama health care bill im sorry but i disagree nurses are in demand wether they are (AAS rn's) or (BSN rn's) and to boot tvcc is now going to make the students take all of these extra classes with out giving more time before implementing these major changes when the students have only been focusing on the pre reqs needed per the old brochure and are going to be blind sided by the new brochure and can you imagine how upset the students are going to be that got lied to by the tvcc counselors who gave them a list of honors classes to take that now no longer exist or will not even be givin a credit point for so they will be out of time and money spent on that honors class for nothing....... ummmmm can somebody say media event saul garza.......lol but seriously thats not going to be a good thing. may be saul garza will be able to get tvcc to reimburse all of those students for taking honors classes not needed but advised by the tvcc counselors.... who knows how that will work but that does not sound good..... and in my opinion this is not to benefit the students this is more about benefiting the additional profits that tvcc and universities will be making after students will have to spend more money on taking more classes and books bad bad bad bad they need to have an option keep the old adn program but still offer the bsn program for those who are ineterested in taking all of those additional classes and who havent already been lied to but for all i know i might be responding to a tvcc employee or representitive from what your comment says it sounds like i just might be replying to a tvcc rep. who voted yes for this silly idea ....... well who knows but if you are good luck with the main stream media.....lol
no, i am not a tvcc rep. i personally dont know much about tvcc. i have looked on career builder just the other day to be exact. what prompted me to look is so many people having concerns about not finding a job. So as i looked the search results were primarily BSN of at least one year experience. Even still most want that experience. I know at my children school, to become a nurse they want at least a BSN. At the end of the day you make the same money unless you are management or some sort. Regarding the waste of honors, it will look good on a resume that you completed an honors course. I just feel that their is more than one side to the coin. I take it that you feel lied to, or took an honors course that won't count.... well all is not lost. yes im sure it sucks to have something new thrown your way, but being in the work field, i learned that its always something new companies want. I will apply this same theory to school. its always a new technique. I mean if all else fail, apply for BSN program, its the same amount of time as tvcc and other community college. Just keep in mind any and all schools, rather 4 year or 2 year, have to maintain their reputation. Therefore they have to stay up with what is going on. If not there students wouldnt get hired and once the bad news travel fast no one would apply. Now, im sure you can find a job somewhere, and your chance increases the better you do in clinicals. Preparing yourself for a BSN is not a bad idea but then again its up to the individual. good luck
200 dollar honors class and 70 dollar book to make my resume look better ????? what ????? what world do you live in ????? reallly ?????? ....... um my resume already looks exxcellent with all my other qualities and experience i rather get my 270 dollars back and just not add that i took an honors class to my resume i know to some people born with silver spoons in their mouths may not think 270 is very much to them but in the real world and in this economy 270 can mean alot. and you are right about one thing schools can get a bad reputation quikly and guess whos about to start getting a bad reputation you got itt budddy trinity valley community college is...... why ????? because once word gets out that they are geared more towards giving associate degrees for vocational nursing... and more interested in making money off students to be forced to take more classes for a bsn sorry my friend tvcc is going to take a lost there will be less applicants which means less money for tvcc to make thinking that they would get more money by forcing more classes when there are other rn programs out there to choose from.... not good not good not good ........ tvcc is doing bad business and then instead of giving more time and saying we will make major chaanges for 2014 or 2015 brochure they just decide to make changes on the spot with ou considering all of the students who have an already set plan and going by the 2012 brochure tvcc new reputation will be no consideration for their rn students again not good my friend....................
I hear your issues and concerns. I spoke my opinion on this topic since you had a survey button. I wanted to explain my reasoning. I guess, ultimately you have 3 options. One, you decided against, to get your BSN in nursing. Two, choose another school to complete your RN. Three, find another major. I guess you did not apply for or make it into the 2012 class so you can avoid the 2013 program changes. If you do not stay in TVCC district you can go to a community college for cheaper. Also, the honors point applied to ANY class of your choice, not a specific class. I took an honors course that went toward my BSN course. I took a class towards my major and got the point for TVCC. I did not pay anything extra for taking honors, it just required an extra assignment. It is not too late to switch schools and majors so that you feel better about college overall. Keep in mind that TVCC's selection process is based off points. If EVERYONE chooses NOT to take extra classes, the selection process will began at 12 points vs 21. However, I highly doubt that would be the case because others think long term toward the future. Also, being that very few people have time to take the 8 pre-reqs needed in the semester to beat the application deadline, most spend that extra time taking relevant classes. If TVCC lowers its quality of the program, I agree their reputation will take a huge hit. Did you know that El Centro gives its' applicants extra points for having outside licenses, such as CNA. Everyone do not have previous experience so they are already at a disadvantage. The cheapest CNA course I have seen is about $500 buck. Now that is something that is expensive, much more than the $270. Almost double. DCCCD, also gives extra points for your Hesi score. For those that barely made it they are at a disadvantage again. So, for those that are more book smart than a test taker and without medical experience the additional courses at TVCC will boost their chances of becoming the nurse they want to be much quicker. I hope you find the solution you are looking for regarding your situation. Just giving you other things to consider but it seems that you want to vent more than anything.
yes i am venting thank you for being understanding i can tell you have already taken your psycology classes.....lol no but really i had a whole plan set in place and my plan went out the window with these new changes i was looking foward to attending tvcc but that plan has now changed.im now looking at other rn programs. Im sure there will be alot more people upsett along with me once word gets out about this im just the first there is plenty of upsett people to come but there will be people like you that will have all those classes completed and will be happy about the new point system especially people that already have bachelors degrees and that already have all those classes and are just looking to get another degree in RN on top of the degree they already have. so yes im venting it sure would have been nice if tvcc gave more of an advance that i was going to need 7 addititional classes on top of the 8 pre requisite classes now enrollment is not until next sept. for classes so that would mean i need to take 7 classes in one semster because taking those additional classes while you trying to do clinicals will be very harrd its better to get them out the way first but 7 classes crammed in one semster because they decide to all of a sudden change there adn plan is not ok with me it might be for someone else but not me if they would have said these major changes are comming but give alot more time befor implementing the major changes to give students more of a chance to complete those additional classes that would have been more considerate but im starting to realize that tvcc is not in it to be considerate to the students instead tvcc is in it to get money out of the pockets of the students and i just rather not attentd a school that cares more about profits and less about students. the new additional classes are not the problem it is the principal of the matter and the greasy slimy way that tvcc is going about the whole new plan... you cant even see the new major changes up front on there web site you have to dig and search through the tvcc web site just to see the new changes coming so alot of people do not know what is going on yet...... thats just crooked and i rather go to a school that is not greasy and side ways like that. it says alot about them. but it is ok i see this more as a sign and a higher power trying to steer me away from a school thats crooked like that im just happy im finding out how tvcc is crooked now rather than later before i applied for their program. well to each is own but thanks for hearing me out good luck with your future with the patients you have with listening to all my fussing it sounds like you will make a wonderfull nurse one day....lol well i wish you the best of luck sincerly.......from your allnurses.com friend...lol
Okay, thank you... lol. Just keep in mind that if you get in without those classes, its not required. I found the info on the health science webpage. It is only used for point purposes it seems like. Therefore its not a requirement to take during clinicals, unless i read it wrong. Goodluck on your path to nursing. I hope it works out for you. Also maybe you can try the LVN route and see how that goes...keep me posted on your choice, it maybe someone out there that could use your advice.
no they are now requireing you take all those classes now in order for you to recieve a (AAS in Regeistered Nusing) but they are not requireing that you have all those classes for the new (AAS in Vocational Nursing) program that they will have but this new aas in lvn program is still pending they are trying to get approval from texas board of nursing for this if they get approved then they will be the first school in the state of texas that will have associate degree vocational nurses all the other schools just offer a certification licence to be a vocational nurse and a associate degree in RN so that will be new i personally do not like that idea im not interested in lvn im ineterested in (AAS RN) but im also not interested in (BSN ) either so i fall in the middle i do not want to be an LVN or A BSN i want to be a ADN which now trinity vally is trying to do away with. so now im leaning towards other schools still interested in keeping there ADN programs with out forcing more classes towards a BSN. so yea i know that all sounded confusing but short an simple i just want to be an ADN nothing more and nothing less and im interested in a school that will let me recieve my ADN with no less or extra classes it will take just to get my ADN not BSN. but yupp that whats going on with my plan but thank you for you advice and feed back.

i am a tvcc rep and would like to give more background. we probably would not have chosen to make these changes were it not for the current conditions that our graduates are facing. we are also choosing to take a pro-active stance to preserve the associate degree as an alternative for nurses or else there will be a move to make the bsn mandatory within 5 or 10 years as is being tried in several states. the institute of medicine and robert woods johnson foundation partnered together for a major report on the future of nursing which included the recommendation that 80% of rns would have their bsn by 2020. there are many initiatives happening nationally to work to meet this goal. many adn students have the goal of getting a bsn but when they graduate very few do. but with the current market conditions, our graduates are having a harder time getting jobs. we want to make sure that our graduates have the best chance of getting hired and being ready to start the last 30 hours of the bsn will help that. with this plan, graduates will not be forced to continue, we just hope a greater percentage will, given that they will be that much closer to being finished. i just talked to one of our graduates from 2008 who was interested in continuing for her bsn. she was excited about the changes and the plans for a more standardized list of general education courses and was going to share this information with others. she said we had eliminated two of the courses that she considered barriers to her continuing. there were other considerations for the changes we made – too much for this forum – but i would welcome the opportunity to talk to anyone who would like further information. and the part about tvcc just caring about money when adding the option for aas in vocational nursing couldn't be farther from the truth. the majority of the students seem to be taking those 3 classes anyway in hopes of going to transition program, so the faculty thought it would be beneficial for them to have the associate degree and make them more marketable. it is not mandatory either.
We are not requiring any extra classes to receive the AAS degree in nursing. We still have the same 8 courses. The extra classes are all part of the BSN curriculum.
