trying to get into a nursing program...but have bad grades from the past

Published

I'm interested in a nursing program. Right now I'm just researching schools and figuring out the requirments for the different nursing programs. I just need a general opinion I guess and a honest one too...:)

I have a bachelor's degree in another field. My problem is that my GPA is a 2.7 and the grades on my transcript are not too great. That was about 2 years ago..at the moment, I'm taking prereqs at another school getting better grades (A's and B's...only have taken a few (finished 1 class and currently taking 2) classes though.

I'm really worried that my first school is hurting my chances of getting to any school because I did so poorly...but since I'm getting better grades, do you think schools will take that into consideration? I know these nursing programs are so competative and they only accept top students, do you have any advice on what I can do now since the damage is, I guess already done? Is there anything besides getting good grades that can help makeup for the past? I'm trying really hard in my prereqs and really want to be a nurse.

]What degree are you aiming for? If you're looking into community colleges, I do know that *some* colleges accept students based on the grades you receive in your RN prerequisite classes, and not your overall GPA. My brother said they strictly look at your prerequisite classes to get into the program; a reason why it's vital to have B's or higher with prerequisite classes. Good luck!

Arcadia - Have you started taking classes yet?

Long - Are you talking to me? If so, I definitely want a BSN.

I have decided to go with the community college. I called and spoke with the head of nursing there, and they were infinitely more helpful and encouraging. She said that my previous degree would help a lot, and that most of my grades would transfer. I happened to good in the important classes, so I may only have to take the biology and lifespan development classes. I also found out that it is not too late to sign up for spring semester, so I applied. She also said that I would definitely be accepted into the LPN program, and that it was just the RN program that is competitive. I am also OK with doing the bridge program, because they also accept almost all RNs with a license. I have never been so excited to start school in my life!!! Thanks for all of the encouragment!

I know that my nursing school only looks at and goes by the courses associated with the degree that you are going for so if you Bachelors is in something all together different and you have to take your pre-reqs it won't hurt you.

no, i haven't started yet. classes begin on january 20th! i am excited and nervous as hell, lol! i'm attending trocaire college up here in buffalo, ny. i'll be taking a&p i & fundamentals of practical nursing as well. i also plan to challange the cna exam after the 1st semester is over so i can work over the summer full time as a cna and part time from then on until i graduate in 2011. not sure if any of you knew this, but basically after your first round of clinical courses you should have over 100 hours worth & can sit for the cna test. my husband is being very supportive and encouraging! i couldn't do this without his love and support! good luck to you all!

Hey Arcadia

I got accepted to trocaire for the fall, I was wondering how are the PN Classes and professors? And do we get to pick our clinical sites?

Thanks :)

Specializes in LPN.
don't get so discouraged about a 2.7 gpa. some of the bsn programs (which have accelerated tracks!) around here aren't nearly as competitive .......just very expensive. i know someone with a 2.69 that was just accepted at one of them here in rochester.

every school has certain requirements but, your going to find that it's the public universities and the community colleges that have the biggest surge in applicants......why? cause they are cheaper. look around your area and see if this is the case for any of the schools around you.

i have no idea about your financial situation but, maybe this is a possibility for you. :)

nazareth? st. john fisher?

Hi everyone. I live in Los Angeles and am starting my prereqs this summer. Since I have a ba in psychology, I only have to take the three bio courses. I wanted to know what community colleges in the area have lottery selections and what ones have waitlists. I want to start asap. Any advice.

Hey everyone!!

To smilesss: I have a friend who is currently looking to take the entrance exam in July for the PN program at Trocaire College. How was the exam for you? and how long did it take before you got your acceptance decision?

Thanks in advance and congrats =)

Hey poettree

The exam was easy. It has an reading part, math and grammar section. It only test you on the basic stuff. Like in english section to make sure you know what you are reading and the math on like fractions, percentage, adding and subtraction, all those basic stuff from jhs. Don't stress your self over it. They link on trocaire website with practice question and answers with it, you can practice those questions. And You have to score over a certain grade in each section in order to pass. Sorry I don't remember what was the score needed to pass for each section. They proctor told me if we don't pass the each part of the exam with a certain grade, we will have to take remedial course. I can't remember how long it took me, I think almost 3 hours for all three section. And they almost have a part for the computer to make sure you know how to use the internet and emails stuff like that, it only took like a minute to finish the computer section. Are you guy applying for the coming fall too?

Thank you so much for all the information.

A friend of mine is applying to trocaire's fall 2011 lpn program. Her exam date is scheduled for tomorrow, May 11th. I am currently waiting on decisions for an lpn in nyc. If I am not accepted to that, I will strive for the boces lpn program in buffalo because tuition is alot cheaper.

Good Luck to your friend! Yea the boecs are cheaper compare to nyc. The cheaper ones in nyc have waiting list n they usually accept student like once a year, except for the private school. I pick trocaire because there's vacations breaks in between. And it's more quiet up there so i can just concentrate with my studies and come back to nyc during breaks.

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and just re-take the courses that are pulling your grades down. I did that myself and once I got my GPA up to par, I was able to get accepted into a program which I've now completed and I'm now on my way to taking the NCLEX.

So- don't despair-you can do it! Even if it means having to tack on a few more semesters re-taking a class or 2, like I had to. :redpinkhe
