triple lumen central line policies

Published

Hello- I am a DON in a long term care facility, we perform a lot of skilled care here. I have heard that changes have been made in Texas so that LVNs cannot flush, administer meds, or complete dressing changes on triple lumens even if they have additional certification- anyone know if this is valid or what the stipulations are in Texas- anyone have a policy already in place?

Thank you

Hello,

I am not from Texas, but as far as I know, in most states, LPN's/LVN's can only deal with an IV line if it is a saline lock They can only flush them and give antibiotics.

Any central line, port, Picc, etc cannot be touched by an LPN. Not that they are not capable, because many are, but that is just the law I guess.

You need to contact the Texas nursing board to find out the policy.

I agree with the above poster. You need to contact the BON for your state.

hello and welcome to the wonderful family of allnurses.com. enjoy your stay, and best of luck to you. :)

In Pa they can only work with peripherals. No Iv push meds. Check your BON. As far as policy for flushes, etc...pharmacy should be able to help.

Just going to post that I followed up with the boards in Texas and LVNs if checked off by a facility RN can care for, flush and piggyback through central lines- just not IV push meds.

I live in Texas and work as a LVN . In my facility I flush and hang solutions and ABT's only into the PICC line. Now I am almost 100% sure the dressing change is to be done by the RN (I just wont do it because it is sterile and I dont want to mess up). I know other LVN's that give other types of meds but I limit myself to hanging ABT's and certin solutions only. I think this situation has alot to do with policy. Id rather just get a RN to do all of it and in trade Ill do a med pass for ya!!!!!:)
