Travelling to Mobile, Alabama

Nurses General Nursing

So, I am going to Mobile, Alabama this summer as a traveller and was wondering if anyone else has worked as a travel RN in Mobile? What is the pay like in that city? Best hospitals to work in? I am an ICU RN with 5 years experience, including CT surgery pts. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!!

I LOVE Mobile. It is a beautiful city, lots to do, friendly people, 3 hours from NOLA! The hospitals are all wonderful! You must eat at the Little Bucket Shop cafe on Dauphin Street in downtown Mobile when you go there! Good luck and have fun!

the pay will probable not be good. That area doesn't pay well. where are you going to be working? Didn't know they were using travelers now.

I lived in Mobile for 7 years, and worked as a nurse at Mobile Infirmary Medical Center for one year out of nursing school before moving to Oregon...I love Mobile...the food is good, the people are nice, and the weather is good...but then again I am native to Alabama so I may be biased! :) The pay may not be what some other folks are used to but the cost of living really isn't that high either...I made $23 per hour as a new grad on the psych unit.

Feel free to PM if you want more info!! And best of luck...I really do miss home!:heartbeat

Thanks for the replies! I am feeling a little like a fish out of water here as I am moving to Mobile from Seattle and have otherwise lived in California for most of my life. My BF has accepted a residency at USA in psychiatry (he is originally from NOLA & wants to return to the South), so I am giving it a go. I can imagine that I will take a pay cut, but I am excited about the change and could use some warm weather!:onbch:

Good luck! I graduated from USA with my BSN in nursing...I really do love Mobile! :) It was quite a change moving from there to the Pacific Northwest! lol

I live in Mississippi and work in Mobile -45 minute drive. The salary is very low in this area. I worked as a traveler, and most Mobile hospitals are technical decades behind other sections of the country.

However, the weather is wonderful. Rain comes hard and fast, we are under storm warnings on occasion, and about every 10 years we have a major storm tear up the area. Winters are mild and the springtime is beautiful. Its a hop, skip and jump from the most beautiful beaches in the country at Gulf Shores and Florida.

If you are traveling, what traveling company did you use?? I tried for months to get on as a traveler in Mobile.

Well, I am with AMN and the prospects of working as a traveller in Mobile look look bad. So, I'm gonna' start looking into my options, like staff positions or local registries. Which hospitals in the area do open-heart surgeries? I love this pt population and I am an ICU RN through and through. Also, do any of you know if there are local nursing per diem/temp agencies in town? This forum is great.....thank you all so much for any help.

You may want to check with Mobile Infirmary Medical Center first, then maybe Springhill Memorial...USA Medical System is owned by University of South Alabama and owns several hospitals there but I dunno what cardiac services they provide...good luck!
