Travel Nursing w/ Teenager considering homeschool

Hey everyone!

I recently started thinking about travel nursing. I have a 13 year old boy who would probably love nothing more than to be home-schooled. I'd like to take him to the East Coast such as DC, Virginia. Also Hawaii and Alaska (where we have lived before). I feel like there is so much for him to see and do and as I'm sure many can relate PTO doesn't build up fast enough to take vacations and just when it seems like it might, it gets slow and we get put on call ... which eats away at the PTO.

I know nothing about the process of homeschooling. I don't think I would want to take him out of school and put him in a new one every 13 weeks. So my question is does anyone know of a good forum for travel nurses that homeschool or do you have any ideas where I would start looking when I decide to do this. Have any of you home-schooled while travel nursing? How did it go?

Also good travel companies that are family friendly and reliable?

I've known several travelers that have home schooled, but they did have partners. I imagine that would be tough if you are alone. You need to check with your state about home schooling, and try it to see if it works under relatively low stress conditions at home before you consider traveling.

I don't know how that would work as different states require different things with homeschooling. Who would watch your kiddo when you worked? Travel nursing would provide you with the opportunity to show your child the U.S. Good luck! I hope someone has some advice for you.

It is your state of residence that provides oversight for home schooling. Traveling doesn't change that. It would be completely unworkable to have to get re-accredited every three months for your schooling.

So I would have to register him with each state & follow their guidelines every 13 weeks? I figured the home state would be home base for the schooling as well. I wonder if it's the same for online schooling.

Check with your home state Dept of Ed and your local school district, as they are the responsible district. You will probably need to have a specific curriculum set up. There are some online schools that are approved by districts. In my state, the curriculum nees to be approved by the local superintendant. Some considerations are what the implications are for obtaining a diploma and how that will impact the college application/acceptance process.

Definitely check into it. I have homeschooled much younger children and I can say it was a full time job, but if your 13 year old is self-motivated and has a flexible personality, it could be an amazing opportunity for both of you. I know one of my kids would do very well in this situation....the other three, not so much.

Each state has very different laws regarding home schooling...check into yours to see what has to be done. I live in a state where there are not stringent rules regarding curriculum (and does not require a portfolio review) but many are more strict.

I have homeschooled all my boys and as far as laws and such, you need to check with your home state and follow their rules/guidelines for homeschooling. Each state has different rules/expectations. I report to the state once/year here in Maine. Your state should have info posted on its state website. Good luck and have fun!

I am currently in your situation only my daughters school district online school which is the same as enrolling a student at regular school. My daughter will be 17 when we start and we will do this for just one semester as she wants to finish her senior year with her class. I would look into some sort of online education for your son. Good luck!
