I put in to transfer to another unit and I want to email my manager to let her know my intentions to transfer. I'm not sure what I should say except that I would like to transfer back to such and such unit. Need some input.

Yeah you're right. I will speak with her next week. I'm sure she will find out Monday about the app though. Nothing I can do about that. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I doubt that she will be made aware as soon as Monday. HR tends to be a bit on the slow side when it comes to reviewing and rerouting internet applications. In my opinion you still have a good chance to be able to talk to her before HR communicates with her.

I am not the person who initiated the tread or who wants a transfer, but I'll answer your question. The atmosphere I work in may be far different than yours, but I am more for seeing if there is even a chance that I would be considered before I start making announcements because I work with people who do actively discourage people from leaving our department. And, they are also the type that once you make a request, the answer is usually 'no' simply because you asked for it. They would rather believe it is their idea. I need to see the area, meet the manager, see the work conditions (even though it would only be from a bird's eye view) before I put my intention out there, because once it is mentioned, it can't be taken back. I see nothing wrong with the OP at least gaining an interview or seeing the area for themselves before announcing his/her intentions.

I agree. At my facility it seems if you are a decent nurse they are very reluctant to "let you go". Its almost as if its an insult to your NM. :(

I have seen it happen too many times and it happened to me. When I first became a nurse, I worked in two clinics-Cardiac and Diabetic, when I was supposed to be cross trained in several locations and then placed where the need was the greatest. Well, the Medical Clinic decided to claim me, but it was a disadvantage because I was limited in what I knew and they weren't able to float me because I was not cross-trained. The nurses I worked with were okay, but the clinic itself was out of control, with no head nurse and rotating monthly which RN would be in charge. I knew there was a need for a nurse in the diabetic clinic, but they avoided the subject altogether because they wanted a functional nurse in the chaos and they didn't like the charge nurse in diabetes. Placed the transfer request in writing (several times, actually), showed consideration, the whole sha-bang...and since then, they had a few nurses that were hired after me, but they were sent instead.

This year, I had a new trick...administration was talking about cross-training nurses because of the inability to send nurses where needed. I went to them and asked to be crosstrained. They sent me to three other clinics to work two weeks each. I noted that I had to be the one to remind them that my time was up in these clinics. My goal was to work in OB-GYN, so, when they sent me there, I just didn't say a word after the two weeks was up. I have been there since Feb, 09 and no one has said a word. So...I didn't either. This is not to say that I am there permanently...I don't know for sure. But, I am learning more, am happier and decided that I will not go out of my way to mention what I want immediately because it did not work for my advantage.

I am well aware of the importance of being considerate towards the powers that be. I also know that many times, decisions are not made to balance out the needs across the board at my place of work, but based on who they like. They do like me, however, but they wanted me to remain in that clinic to balance out the insanity because I was not argumentative, went with the flow and worked. All new nurses are supposed to be crosstrained to ALL clinics in case there is a need, and this was a disadvantage to me because I was limited to work in only one area. Now, I can work several areas, get more overtime and can add to my resume. Or, if they wanted to send me elsewhere, I would not suffer from too much culture shock. Again, I say that there is nothing wrong with learning the lay of the land, keeping things a bit discrete, at least until after the interview. You may decide after the interview that you don't want to be bothered at all, and now, there is a manager that might take it personal that you even are thinking about leaving.

I'm putting off the transfer for a bit. If HR calls me monday or tuesday, I am going to withdraw my application. I think its kind of a hairy time since I will be going on leave for a month after surgery.

How about: "Dear Manager, I'm sick of the incompetent management of this unit and I feel as if I am losing my mind working on this ship of fools. I've heard such and such a unit has semi-competent management, and that the nurses there aren't a bunch of backstabbing witches. Therefore, this note is to let you know of my intention to get the heck outta here before I go postal. Sincerely, TurnLeftSide"

Lol, good for you! I'd be quiet as a church mouse. I'm cross trained on 4 units. They treat me pretty good and appreciate that I'm willing to go wherever needed. I don't ever say a word about which is my favorite because I fear I'd never be back there again. Weird how things have a way of working out like that, huh? :D

I have to laugh at times...my administrator calls my clinic often (and I am always the fortunate one to answer the phone) and the other day, she said "Oh, Pagan...I didn't know you were there...what are you doing in OB-GYN...how long have you been there...?" And, I say "I'm crosstraining. Remember I answered the telephone yesterday, also". She says "Oh, okay" with this chipper, friendly voice. It is amazing, you know...no one really knows where anyone is these days. And, like you said, if you make a preference, you'll never get it again, or be sent to the bowels of hell. Heck if I would map out my plans to anyone...:D
