Torn to pieces - Pls help?

Nurses Relations

Published

My boss says she has received several complaints about me. Nobody has ever come to me with "concerns with my performance". I will be completely honest in this post since I don't know anyone here. Some of the complaints include:

1) "Leaving the floor for extended periods of time": The only time I ever leave my floor is to either pick up blood from the lab or during my two 15-minute break and one 30-minute lunch break. And I ALWAYS ask for permission before I go outside. There are two other smokers on my floor and they live with the same rules I do. Our nurses station is broken into two sections, with more computers to chart on in the back. Often times I go back there to chart. I'm not a loud and rambunctious person. Many times the charge nurse or secretary will call my phone and I walk to where they are and say "Are you calling me? I'm right back here!" LOL I encouraged my boss to look at security cameras to see my movements throughout the hospital. Besides, I'm too busy to wander around the hospital!

2) "She doesn't answer/carry her phone": Actually I am one of the nurses who DOES carry her phone. There might be the rare occasion where I have both hands in a "sticky" situation (ie inserting a Foley, etc) and I'm unable to answer the phone. But if that's a sin... I'd rather be a sinner than breaking sterility, dirtying my phone...

3) "She gives narcotics at night when the patient doesn't get them during the day": I remember once losing track of time and forgetting to get pain meds for a patient. Of course, I was written up for that. Now I give pain meds as the patient requests (according to drs orders) and now it's too much. I will give in and say that I may be more likely to give pain medications (I work on a post-op floor BTW) after seeing my mother suffer with horrible pain due to cancer which claimed her life this year. I don't want to see anyone suffering. But I suppose it's the numbers I should worry about.

4) "She's not witnessed when getting narcotics": Honestly, there are NO nurses on my floor that stand and wait for you to waste narcotics. So why am I the only one targeted? If that nurse is running through the nurses station and I need her to witness, she would fingerprint the Pyxis and run off on whatever she was previously working on.

5) "She didn't turn the bed alarm on such and such patient": Patient safety is of great importance and so are bed alarms. There have been occasions where I've walked in a room and an alarm isn't on. Whether I did it or someone else did it (for example someone taking my pt to the restroom and forgetting to turn on the alarm) it's hard to tell. But yes, tell me about it when it occurs! Does it really need to involve being written up over? Matter of opinion I suppose. Now if it's an ongoing problem, that's another story.

So basically the meeting with my boss was nothing short of a Salem witch trial. Seriously. And because I'm being accused of using drugs I willingly took a urine test. I do take Lortab on rare occasions and Klonopin on a daily basis so I know at least the Klonopin will come back. But I have a legit prescription. And ironically, I went on Klonopin after going to my doctor and breaking down over the stress of my job and a few particular employees. But apparently the process is to declare your prescriptions after your drug test comes back positive. Sounds weird to me, but that's how they said it's done. Oh, and I'm suspended until the drug test comes back.

So with all that being said I am SO hurt, SO betrayed, and SO mad. Alot like a grieving process. Even with a clean drug test I know my boss is going to fire me based on accusations alone. My job was always one good thing going for me in my life. Especially after losing my mother (in a deep depression over that still).

Has anyone ever been through this? What do I do? How do I feel? Even if I am allowed to return to work, how do I work as an efficient nurse knowing I'm walking on glass and I don't know who will make something up next? I don't recall ever doing anything to make any nurses or supervisors target me. I know I have probably been withdrawn since losing my mother, but I sure as hell am not doing drugs! I love my job too much!

We all know that there are alot of errors made in all nursing environments, some are accidental ommisions, some are comissions, some patients may not get meds or treatments by accident or just because the nurse is too rushed and thinks she can skip it and not be noticed. And we all know that if every single thing that went against policy was reported to management who then reported it to the nursing boards, that there would be very few nurses working in this country. Because we are all human and humans do make mistakes. The fact of the matter is that cliques cover each other's butts and if you are not a part of it and they dont like you, it is easy enough to either make stuff up about you, catch you in an error or even sabotage you in other very nefarious ways. I don't know why we have to attack each other as this weakens us as a group. And, in the days ahead as more and more cuts are made, we are all going to need to be strong and united.

do you work in long term care? anyways i was coming on here to ask pretty much the same question you did, so no need to repeat.

i have been targeted, going through it right now. did not get a reason from the don...he left a partial message for the ward

clerk to pass on!! then don leaves town!! some complaint my conscious is clear about...did not happen. i just got off

shift and home... alternating between betrayal and anger. a ward clerk tells me i am gone?? i know someplace in here

is wrongful termination. and i care not to ask some government agency to "help me". but i do agree with most posters...

take this as a sign to move on. there are good places to work, well there used to be few years ago.

sorry this post repy is written in very emotional state just to let you know you are not alone.

this i will pass on: a quote from dr cindy grims phd to a womans conference:

your rejection of me does not mean something is wrong with me.

it means something is right with me and you do not have the capacity for me. " amen.

i haven't read all the responses so i don't know if this is touched upon already but are you union...if you are you should contact a rep and never deal with managment again without one there! if not take it in stride people can be nasty if you know that you are not at fault cut you ties with this place see if you can resign rather than being fired if that where it is heading, that sucks! sorry!

Nope. No unions here in Georgia. I don't know if this sort of thing (literal harassment of an employee by another or other) is as prevalent in other professional fields, but if it's a growing problem in nursing I think employees should have a rep! In all states! Not sure how I feel abt unions in general, but I think there is a time and place for them. My story, and the others posted above, are absolute tragedies. Especially in a field with shortages and an incredible need for people who do generally care. It's ironic how the ones there for the paycheck are generally the ones harassing other employees. At least at my hospital that is the case.

I went through what sounds like the same thing as a new grad. On first write up they had something there that I was aloud to do. It was in are policy book and yet when I confronted my boss she sighed and then stammered incoherently and walked away. I was blown away! My second write up I quit. Mind you I was written up for lots of small things that new grads deal with their first year and maybe if they gave me more then 4 days orientation! I would'nt of had those problems as much. I will tell you their were nurses there who made huge med errors and it was always brushed under the table. So I definately felt targeted for some unknown reason. The only thing that I could think of was jealousy. All the nurses including my boss and bosses daughter had to take a telemetry class and test and if you did not pass the first time you had to repeat the class. Everyone was saying the test is really but I passed it the first time. Actually me and one other nurse from day shift. That was when my boss started to come down hard on me and watch my every move and read my charting etc. Guess I needed to vent! Sorry. I agree with some of the other post. Start applying else where. I really like where I'm at right now so I know their are better places out there your not stuck and you'll eventually find a good fit. Also, I'm very sorry you had to go through this I know when I was in the thick of it I cried everyday and wondered why didn't I just go to message school! Lol...but seriously! Nursing can be soooo stressful.

Don't expect everyone to be treated the same. Once you are targeted they will make sure everything's in writing, that's why you haven't been persoanlly addressed. The goal is not to help you improve your performance, it is to get rid of you. Take the advice that it's time to search for new job. I have a friend who went throught the same scenerio as you and she was fired. She got a new job and said it was the best thing that could have happened. She was seeing a psychiatrist before she left

R/T all the harrassment. You would think the managers would go after the harrassors but instead they seem to enable them. Nursing can be rewarding but can also be sooo screwed up

I am in the same situation as you are. I have a meeting with manager. At least you have 2 years of experience so its not going to be hard to find another job. This is my first hospital job and I've only worked there 4 monthes and I know I wont be able to find another job. I'm sure there are better jobs for you out there.

if someone wants someone gone, they look at everything. who knows what is really going on. do what you need for you- nursing is not a "nice" business all the time.

i had a situation when i was a very young nurse, and coincidentally had some horrendous personal stuff going on (assault victim) so i was stressed. i also had a work-related injury- voila- i'm a risk to have around...so all things i did (or what they thought i did- some were by another fairly new nurse) were documented. being an idiot (mostly from being new) when they said resign or be fired, i resigned- so no unemployment benefits.

do some managers give choices between being fire or resign? or are nurses being terminated after couple of write ups?

I was only at my hospital for 6 ,months and it was my first job too. Have faith you'll find something. I'd start looking for internships at hospitals also flu clinics will hire new grads Ya know the nurses that give out flu shots at Wal-Mart. Mollen Imunizations is one such co. Consulting for Headstart- you basically teach med administration classes and universal precaution classess. You also check orders and MARS and clarify w/physcians if need be. I was really nervous at first being up in front like teacher But I loving sharing what I know! LTC is another way to go and don't let the neg talk discourage ya! LTC nurses have to be sharp and know when a reidents is in distress an needs help and you have less resources. I've been in LTC and we have had plenty of critical situations. And if you love wound care its definately a way to get your feet wet!

if you resign you can't get unemployment. most managers, as previously stated will terminate you once they have gone to these lenghts to write you up and give days off. you can be terminated without official "write ups" for immediate termination offences like sleeping on the job, impaired on the job, and abuse towards a patient amongst others.
