Took the NCLEX RN today. Idk what to expect

Published

Hi guys,

So I took the nclex RN today in CA. My questions stopped on 99 or 100 (not sure because I was too nervous to remember). It took me about 2.5 hours until the screen turned blue. I had 15-16 SATAs, 1 med calculation, 2 exhibits, lots of prioritization, "follow up, most, priority, first" words, lots of therapeutic responses, lots of meds (more of like how to respond to client's statements), and rest were mix of delegation, etc. I honestly don't know how I feel about it right now. I'm too scared to check PVT. How do you guys think I did? This is my 4th time taking the test and I'm really praying that this is it. Input would be appreciated

Hey there,

Canadian first time tester here.

It sounds like we wrote a similar exam except I had 265 questions and probably 10 exhibits but they were critical thinking ones with multiple diagnoses, lab values and progress notes. Sometimes the question was so vague that I wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for. I think that if you got that many questions, it could mean that you were doing so well that the computer deemed you competent enough in all areas and stopped the exam. Take a break and have some fun for the next two days and don't worry about your score until you get the letter. I mean that's what I am trying to do to cope with my high anxiety level. I walked out of the testing centre feeling crushed. I'm more worried about the pharmacology questions I got because that's my area of weakness. Anyway, I pray that we both passed the exam. We worked so hard to get to where we are.

Thank you for the optimism. Yeah, it really was a tough test. I couldn't believe my computer shut off at that number. I don't know if I did so well or not. Anyway, let's keep our heads up! And pray pray pray still. Best of luck for both of us. Let me know when you receive your results, nurse!

There really is no magic formula to say how you did based on the questions that you got when it comes to the NCLEX. Some people get a lot of prioritization and fail, some people get a lot of SATA and fail. It all depends on the difficulty level of the question YOU got. It is a tough exam and wishing you the best. Try not to wrack your brain too much on the types of questions you got. Sending you positive vibes.

No one can POSSIBLY guess at how you did based on what you said. There is no way to know. The presence or absence of SATA questions is irrelevant. So is how many med calculations, prioritization, etc. Every topic of question, every format of question, can be either above or below the passing standard. the number of questions you got (99 or 100) is entirely irrelevant too.

ALL you can know, all anyone can really know in taking this exam, is that if you stop at the minimum number of questions you either did very well and could demonstrate competency quickly, or very poorly and could demonstrate incompetence quickly.

Anything above the minimum number of questions indicates ONLY that this was how many questions were required to meet the 95% Confidence Interval required in order to pass the exam. If it's met....it's a pass. If you fall too far below the possibility of passing, it's a fail.

At this point, nothing you can do but have patience. Playing the PVT is a fool's game, frankly, because there is no guarantee you will not be charged even if you pass. While it's generally considered to be a 'pass' if your card is not charged, and a 'fail' if it is, it isn't foolproof.

And yes, you CAN be charged fees even if you change the expiration date. It's for the protection of the business to refuse to accept an expired card; they are perfectly within their rights to do so if they choose. Someone posted recently she changed her card's expiration date and was charged in spite of that.

OP....hang in there. Breathe. Do something to take your mind off it, and good luck!

Any word yet on your results?

That's the thing, I don't even remember the answer to my last question. I just know it was a scenario and I think I was too busy applying the Kaplan strategy. I just know it was about how what to do to a patient having this certain condition in a situation. Because honestly if it was easy, I would've remembered it. Plus, I didn't expect my computer to shut off. Not at all. :/ regardless, Thank you so much for the positive vibes. I really need it

if you are in California your name will be posted 2 days from the time you take your nclex, which is today.

I just realized too that I had to redo my palm scan and they had to file an incident report. My first 3 times taking the test, I had issues with my palm scan too and I had a hold every time. Do you think the same thing happened?

If an incident report was triggered (which WILL occur with a faulty palm scan), then your results are placed on Hold status until a QA review can be completed on your exam. It's beyond the usual 'recheck', they are looking for an indication of a security breach....cheating. Holds generally take 24-72 hours to lift, but once lifted, your results are released to the State BoN.

Probably happened to you this time, too. Hang in there!
