Hello everyone..
I got accepted into a LVN program recently and I'm very excited! I am a CNA but do not currently work as one. I have a customer service job with guaranteed hours and they said they are willing to work around my school schedule. I am very lucky they will but was wondering do you think I should do home care instead while going to LVN school. Will this help land a job after I graduate or do you think it doesn't matter..if you're a new grad you're a new grad. I feel so comfortable with my job right now but not sure which is the best option since I have bills to pay and with home care the shifts are not set. Please any input would be great!

I would rather have a CNA job than customer service during school. The more experience the better! Besides, it is always useful to network for when you finish :) But i do understand about being comfortable in your job...that mind set got me stuck at my last job for 5 years before finally quitting to go to NS.
Good luck!

If you know for a fact that the customer service job is willing to work with your schedule, then I would stay. I would keep my CNA active because sometimes this is a requirement for graduation. Home care once in a while may give you some experience after you graduate. Be careful not to take on too much. School will be your life. Best of Luck.
Thank you for the replies! I really appreciate it. I think what I'm going to do for now is keep my current job and once I start school and get a feel of how it's going to be decide if I want to get a CNA job or stay here. My work now is very laid back and when it's slow they tell us we can do our homework so I like that! Thanks again:)

I can see how being a CNA would benefit you, but its also tough work!! Youre probably going to be tired a lot from school. At least with the customer service job you can rest your feet, lol! If they are willing to work with you and school then I wouldnt give that up! Just my opinion.

I'm in the same boat but I'm starting my pre-req's next month for my LPN. I also work in customer service at UPS. I also have my CNA but not working as one even though I do want to keep it. :) I'm going to stay here at UPS b/c 1. They will pay for school & 2. b/c i can get my homework done at work and study. I work second and not very busy here at night. Plus I have a 1 yr old at home so I figure this will be my homework/study time. As far as what would be best for you... I would do the CNA. Like ^ says, the more experience the better.

I would definately keep my laid back job during school...may try to get a casual or prn position with a rehab or nursing home as a cna once per week or so....the experience will definatley help you in school. I am a CNA graduating from LPN school in the spring, I have definately used the things I have done at work, on exams and have been really successful. Applying oxygen, vital signs, contact precautions, patients on isolation, you name it, CNA's do it! Good Luck!

Considering you have bills, I would say that it's most likely be your best interest to stay where you're comfortable and in the form of knowing your bills will get paid, along with having guaranteed hours @ a place willing to work with your schooling. While a CNA job or CNA experience in/before nursing school would definitely look great on your resume and applications, it's not a necessity.

I am in a similar situation. I am working as a SNA awaiting my certification. I start the practical nursing program at Richmond Ivy Tech August 22 and I have been debating whether or not to talk to my employer about working maybe 1 day per week or quitting to concentrate on school. I am lucky as far as not really needing to work while going to school...I started this job for the experience. I just don't want to have too much on my plate while attending school.
