Hi,
It's been a while since I've posted in this forum, I have a question for any former or current Duke SON FNP distant learning students. I am current considering to apply to Dukes Online FNP program and I'd like to know how often must a student travel to NC per semester? I love in New York and as much as I was trying to read up on this information I've been left guessing still lol... May someone clarify this for me? My interpretation is that once you begin a class where clinicals are required you are to travel for three (3) day weekends that semester? Or is it once per semester? A little confused. Duke has a great program and I will be completing my RN-BSN program this December and I hope to get accepted to Duke next fall..any additional info, suggestions, or survival advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks to all in advance

I am neither a former or current Duke FNP distant student, but like you am in the application process. Back in June or July I emailed the BSN-to-DNP program coordinator about distance learning and here is his response to campus visits for MSN in NP distance students:
If I am an online/distance student in the FNP program, how often will I be required to go to the Duke University campus?
At the beginning of the semester, an orientation day is conducted. It is very helpful for distance students to attend Orientation—but not required. The Physical Assessment course (N332) has 3 campus weekends of required attendance. These are scheduled about one weekend a month and the specific dates are planned well in advance. There are no other required attendances for the program.
He also added:
I would say that 99% of our online program is done online. There are few required sessions on campus, and they are only the physical assessment classes. As you can imagine, it would be difficult for Duke to know how well you are at your assessments without seeing you actually perform them. But, other than that, you will do your work in your home.
I hope this information helps. I wish you the best in the application process. I'm looking forward to hear anything back from Duke. I would LOVE to receive my advanced nursing education from their wonderful program.

I attended Duke, but I was a campus student. Physical assessment required distance students to come to campus for three 3-day weekends (all day Friday and Saturday, 3/4 day Sunday) over the course of one semester.
My advice is to go as often as you can, because there is nothing quite like getting to spend time on the Duke campus!
Thank you so much for your information BluDevil, DNP and lancemarv_RN.
Did you end up applying nysnowbunny? There is another forum and some of us got interviews if u wanna follow it. It's under fall MSN 2014 I think for duke.
No lancermav_RN I was hoping to make the 3.4 gpa cusp to avoid taking the GRE, I moved my application to Spring. I am currently studying to take the GRE soon. Thanks for your answers!
As someone who also had to take the GRE, I wish you the best. I used Kaplan and thought it was perfectly fine. A bunch of us that interviewed are anxiously awaiting word by Feb. 19th. I'll keep you posted. Let me know if there is any advice I can share with you. Best of luck.
