Tips for softening scrubs and making them last :)

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Hi Everyone, I know I have seen this post at least once before but I haven't found anything recently posted so I thought I would start the topic up again for discussion for all the new nurses (like me) out there that might be wondering the same thing.

Tips and tricks for softening scrubs!!

I know a lot of scrub fabric is made with anti-staining and anti-microbial properties but man oh man some of the new ones I've picked up could easily stand on their own and possibly be used to display other articles of clothing on like a mannequin lol

I know plenty of scrub brands that offer soft and non itchy fabrics but they can also run up the budget in terms of cost and as a new nurse just starting out building up your scrub wardrobe getting the most out of your money can really be helpful!!

Besides tons of washing (yep that's the only tip I can contribute) there might be other little known ways of softening up stiff as a board scrubs :nurse:. The following site has some natural tips on it, I haven't tried any of them though..thoughts?

For those that are interested I have found some great deals for scrubs at my local Dollar General store and Family Dollar store. I never thought to check these stores out before but they really have a nice selection of colors and patterns so if your looking for affordable scrubs to start off in ($6-$8 tops and $5-$8 pants ) you may want to swing by and check them out :)

I purchase my scrubs @ Uniform Advantage, Try the butterSoft collection they are amazing and soft, they don't wearout as fast either. I buy the ones on clearance to save $$ you can get tops and bottom for $7 to $11 (cheaper than Walmart). even the uniform advantage brand is good. Hope this helps. P.S. look up coupon code for cheaper shipping. I bought 4 sets and two extra tops for $123.00 + $7.99 shipping. Amazing!!! www.uniformadvantage.com

@Jewels1222 what do you think of the sizing for this brand? I've been checking them out online and the reviews are showing a lot of people saying that they run big.

I really like Urbane brand scrubs, but I find that they fade quickly. I've been wearing mine since June and they are starting to look pretty sad. I actually recommend something like Greys Anatomy. They don't fade AT ALL. They may cost more, but in the long run they will last longer because they don't look worn out so quickly. Koi scrubs are nice, but they fade quickly too.

Specializes in geriatrics.

I like MOBB scrubs. They have many styles and colours to choose from, and they soften up nicely.

Specializes in Rehab/LTC.

I get the butter soft from Uniform Advantage and yes, they do run big. Which is good for me! They are soft, comfy, not terribly expensive, and last forever.

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVSICU, Precepting & Teaching.

i was hoping for some excellent answers to the original question. i have a wardrobe of soft, comfortable and non-scratchy scrubs but am forced to buy the stiff, scratchy and uncomfortable ones as our new dress code specifies not only the color we wear but which style number and where we buy them. (and for how much). i bought the things, and they're miserable! since i'm going to be forced to wear them, i'd really love to hear any tips anyone has for making them wearable.

Is the material of the Urbane scrubs hard and scratchy? I am wondering because I just got a pair from Amazon, and they don't fit like I feel like Urbanes should and the material is so hard and itchy! I am curious as to their "authenticity," but I have never tried on Urbane scrubs before!

Urbane scrubs are the absolute best!! They should definitely not feel hard or itchy.
