I haven't been physically threatened, but I did cover a case for two weeks where I felt unsafe. 5yr old pt lived w/ mom and step dad. Step dad looked high all the time, plus there were random males in and out of the house, some would creep out from upstairs and didn't even know there was somebody else in the room next to where I was. I felt uneasy all the time. It was a night case, so my eyes were wide opened the minute i walked in that house to the last. Fast FF...that pt is now in foster care, reasons that I know not for sure but I can bet my life safety and neglect topped the list.

The things we do for money*shakinghead*

My question is,if someone is literally coming at you with a knife, why is it not safe to leave?

My agency says you cannot leave until your pt is safe first,or else you face abandonment charges.

I agree that we should be able to leave in a situation like that. However, I can see abandonment/neglect because the person that is a threat to others is not a safe person to leave a child with in that kind of mental state. Also what if something happens to the child when you know the person is a danger to others? Its a tricky situation for sure. On the other side, if you don't live to get out safely none of it really matters. Maybe we should be fighting for better laws to protect us in the home considering the work we do.

I'll take my chances with the BON on abandonment charges...I refuse to allow someone to stab me just because I'm not supposed to leave.
