hello,
I too am waiting to hear from the BON. In the previous summer I lost a job as a RN in a facility I loved. I probably would have retired from this place. I however got caught up with alcohol. I never went to work drunk but I was seen in a video placing an IV outside of the hospital and also drinking. I was fired when this video was placed on the internet by a "friend". I havent heard anything from the board yet, however, the Chief of Nursing at the hospital said she would be reporting me. It has been 6months and I live in fear that all I worked for will be ripped from my hands....what are your thoughts about my situation. I would think I would have heard from them by now. From this situation I have turned my life around, have given up alcohol all together and love my career even more today.
Thanks,
Ashlea

ashleaRN- Much like your situation it also took several months before I was notified by BON. My employer 1st gave me the opportunity to self report. Unfortunately, I did not heed their advise, with great regret and eventually I had and ESO placed on my license (and still do). Which prevents me from working as an RN...if I had it to do all over again........I would have taken my employers advise and definitely self reported. Hinesite is 20/20.
Thanks to all of you thus far who posted a response. I am a brand new member, although I have been watching everyone else from a distance for a while now. Not a creeper, I swear! I have just not had a lot of confidence to share my story/experiences until now. Thanks again

Ashlea,
First I would like to congratulate you for turning your life around. Your physical and mental health are important for anything that you do. Secondly, I would like to express my condolence for your situation and I hope it works out for the best. Hopefully, you left your hospital on good terms - that is, you acknowledged to them that you understood that they needed to report you and to let you go, etc. If so, perhaps the Chief of Nursing would be willing to advise you in your situation. It can't hurt to have her know that your life has been changed for the better because of this.
Good luck.

Personally I think what someone does in their private life is their own business-even if it ends up on the internet. Unless I'm representing my work they have no right to interfere. If I want to get drunk, rip off my clothes and dance on a table in front of everyone that is my right to do so. Just because someone is a nurse doesn't mean they can't get drunk and make a fool of themselves...sheesh I thought this sort of attitude went out years ago.
Ok, the IV thing was stupid but hardly a firable offence unless illegal drunks were involved, even then it's a police not work matter.
I live in a different country but I don't think the board of nursing could care less about drunken antics. Maybe the reason you haven't heard from them is because it's too petty a matter to deal with.

I don't think the drinking was so much the problem as placing an IV was. Why were you doing that?
It wasnt the drinking that caused me to get fired. It was the IV. Also I failed to mention that I recieved an IV within the hospital and was also fired for that. The IV that was placed while drinking happened because there was a paramedic there who had the supplies we had a girl there that was ill so me being the super ER nurse (jk) that I am took matters into my own hand. Unfortunately, it was taped and placed on youtube. As for me recieving an IV while at work (again I work in an ER), it was no reason to fire me. The person who should have been fired was the one who placed the iv in me. They are claiming I practice out of scope. Who knows. Its been six months and I havent heard anything. I did leave on good terms, I didnt argue with them, I accepted what I did. I sucked up, mustered the courage I had left and went and found a new job which I love. I am now working in a neighboring state. If I get reprimanded in NJ (where i was working when fired), can I work in PA without getting in trouble. Can someone shed some light on this.

Really? Was the person doing the IV on you needing practice? I don't see how, if you were a willing participant, either one of you would get in trouble (well I'm sure different facilities have different policies). In my last job, I practiced blood draws on a couple different nurses and nobody got in trouble.
So let me get this straight...the IV you did that wound up on youtube was actually into a person who needed medical attention? Yep I guess that would be outside your scope in that you made the call whether or not she needed an IV. Have you considered calling the BON anonymously to find out what the deal is?
Yes I did technically practice out of scope...They are saying that the IV in the hospital was without a doctors order...Idk..we did this all the time. Its been gonig on for years. I geuss I was made an example. I havent called the board. Ive just been waiting to see what is going to happen. My manager told me I will most likely get a slap on the wrist, but I geuss I could get into a lot of trouble.
Yikes; you must have nerves of steel, all this waiting to see. Sounds like you at least learned a good lesson, so I hope that if the board does intercede, it will go easy on you. :redpinkhe
Im hoping.....Im pretty calm but I am working a lot and raising a 1 year old. I look at it this way you can only live a day at a time. Its been six months and I havent even received a letter or notice so I hope this just goes away. I did learn my lesson and Im a different person bec of it.
