Thoughts on Maric College?

U.S.A. California

Hi

I threw my story out on another thread. I'm just finishing up 20 years in the Navy most of it was in Naval Special Warfare where I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to cross-train as a medic. As I was looking for a 2nd career I kept saying things like "I can do this, or I can do that." I finally came to realize that what I "wanted" to do was be an RN. It's a good way to take some of the lessons that I really didnt want to learn working for "Uncle Sucker" and put them to good use helping someone else.

but I digress

I'm starting my classwork as best I can prior to my actual retirement date but I'm getting a little frustrated when the people at the college I'm going to keep telling me how it'll be at least 2 years from the time I finish my pre-req stuff (A&P, chem & microbiology) before I can get into the "core" ADN program. In some things I can show quite a bit of patience, in things like this, not so much.

I'm posting because Maric College is boasting that they have no waiting list, and a better than 85% pass rate on NCLEX-RN. I just keep getting a intermittant alarm going off when I talk to anyone there. It has that slight scent of diploma mill. Not that I have anything against a diploma mill but will the diploma that I get from there do anything for me in the future if I decide to trade up to a BSN? Most importantly is the training that you get from there up to speed?

Just curious if anyone has any experiance with Maric?

Thanks in advance

Well to be on a wait list at a community or state college, pre-reqs must be done. I went to Maric with my pre-reqs done and they said that would cut about 10,000 off the price but finding a seat would be much more difficult than if I started from scratch. I wasn't too pleased with the whole situation. They told me, which they probably tell everyone, that i was in their top 5% for scoring on the test that they do and would not stop calling. to me i think they wanted the money. I just can't see myself taking out a loan for that when I can wait and pay like at most 5,000 for Community college. but that's just me, i'm a poor young college student.

ok, i see where you are getting at. i did all of my pre-reqs for the community college, but the GPA between my 3 bio subjects just isn't high enough. i took 2 of those classes at the same time, thinking that i can get them done quicker...i did, but my GPA wasn't good enough. they didn't tell me at Maric how much they would take out for completing my pre-reqs, but they said that i'm in the program and i don't have to re-take those classes...why is getting into a nursing program so hard???:o

Hello,

I am an the ADN program there and I like it. I have been here for little over a year and I start my clinicals in Feb. I had to complete my GE's first. I think you would like it too. Maybe just ask if you are able to transfer any of your GE's that you have completed but other than that its a good schol.

Well I don't know anything about that college but i could tell you this. First find out if there are any hospitals with a paid tuition program. Where I am from all the hospitals in the area are willing to pay your tuition if you are willing to work for them for 2 years after you graduate. If there are programs like this then go for it now, instead of wasting more time reaching your goal. Best of luck to you.

thanks, smilealot! i needed to hear from someone already in the program. maybe i'll see ya there! it starts jan 22. is the program really hard? coz i know i need to work at least part time to live down there!

hi,

i am applying for the may 2008 start and before i invest that kinda of money i just really would like feedback from rn's or anyone that is a current student or who is also trying to get in so i can get a better idea. ty

Hi,

I just got a call from a Maric rep today and she told me that the program is 22 months long (the next one in SD starts in Sept) and that I could transfer my pre-req's from the community college. She also told me that GPA didn't matter at all and what mattered the most was your score on the TEAS test. She said that the min. score you need is 80%, and a score of 85% or better would give you a really really good chance of getting into the program. I don't recall her saying anything about needing prior medical experience, but she's mailing me a packet with all of the information about it. (I live in NorCal) Anyway, she was really nice and I didin't get that salesman vibe at all. She just gave me straight-up information. :)

Anyway, $50k doesn't sound bad at all for me considering I was just about to apply to a private LVN school that was just as much (well, more like $42k) PLUS an additional $35k+ for their LVN-RN Bridge! (I know, I sound crazy right? but I'm just trying to be done fast) I'm not too worried about the BSN part either since I know that UofP and Kaplan have the programs. I've applied to and been rejected to the Cal State BSN programs so, no I am not going to spend anymore time waiting - esp in a waiting list! LOL.

I have a question, I have prev. experience as an RDA (reg. dental assistant), do you think they'll accept that? And I'm a bit confused regarding what someone said about having a harder time getting a seat because of transferring classes from another college?? Oh, and I took the TEAS test back in January and got a 83% - if you were me, would you stick with it, or retake to get 85 or better?

thanks!

bluemoon; the program at maric college in san diego is now on a ranking system. Based on the points you have during the qualifing prosess will determine your ranking. They choose the top 50 applicants and about 10 alternates.

first will have to do and entrance exam. that score will determine how to get more points. teas test is a big factor. but, not the decideing factor. if you have alot of "PATIENT CARE" experince your teas score could be lower than 80%. how you score on this test will rank you against other applicants. What type of medical experience you have will rank you as well. CNA, MA, PCAT, EMT, Surge Tech, Med Tech, Paramedic, LVN...ect. last, having a degree AA or BA, BS will give you more point and being a Maric college or Kaplan Higer Education Graduate will give you points.

Thanks for all the info! Do you know if Maric requires a certain amount of experience, like 6 months for example? I have a friend who is also interested but doesn't have any medical experience. If he were to take a CNA class now (and be done before the august app deadline for Fall 08) would it be even considered?

Thanks!

I know this is an old thread but wow!!! I can't believe Maric is not on a point system. That goes to show how impacted the schools are around here not to mention the level of competition. This is definitely scary and discouraging.....

Are theyre people out there who don't get into nursing program after 7 years? I say 7 years bcuz thats how long you have till your pre-reqs expire. This is crazy!
