Thomas Jefferson University APW/FACT

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Hi everyone,

I am graduate of Ohio University with a BS in Physiology of Exercise and I am applying for accelerated/graduate entry nursing schools and I am interested in TJU. I was wondering if anyone has gone through either of the APW or FACT programs. Is the FACT program for past students who have a strong background in the sciences? I am looking for information about these two programs and how they differ.

I don't think you necessarily need a strong background per se, but any nurse should have a good understanding of the relevant sciences. The major difference is the length: FACT is 12 months and APW is, I believe, 2 years. With APW you have the opportunity to do externships whereas there is little time for that in FACT. APW classes I've heard are mixed with the traditional students at times. FACT is quicker and costs less in the long-run.

Not sure if you're still looking into TJU, but I just graduated from the APW program on May 28th. FACT and APW are essentially the same program, with the only difference being the length of time it takes to complete (FACT is one year straight through and APW is two years with a summer break). You have to have (at least) a Bachelor's degree in another field to qualify for both programs. I did not have any background in science or any medical field when I applied. I chose APW over FACT due to this reason. I felt that one year would have been too much for me and that I would not have felt adequately prepared. However, everyone is different. In the end, I am grateful I chose the slower route. I was able to get an externship at Jefferson last year and wouldn't trade that experience for anything. I'm currently studying to take NCLEX at the end of July and it's a little comforting to know that just about all of my classmates who have taken it so far have passed on their first attempt. Good luck in making a decision (if you haven't already done so) and let me know if you have any questions!

Hi jocy_anne ! Do you remember when the application window opened for you to apply at TJU? I submitted my application to NursingCAS, just waiting on it to be verified, but I can't find anywhere on TJU site that says when we will be able to submit the NursingCAS applications.

Thanks!

Hi guys. Can anyone who is currently in the FACT program talk more about it?

Specializes in New grad in MICU.

I'm in FACT and I have really enjoyed it. The program is fast so you have to make it your top commitment for the year. They give us our schedules at the last minute sometimes, so you have to be flexible. I chose FACT because I had a previous degree with some science/ health classes. I also wanted to get the BSN as fast as I could because I knew I was a hardworking student and I could manage. Some people extern during the program but it isn't recommended. Our schedules change a lot as we go through rotations. So, if you are interested in working during the program I would recommend APW. If you want to get your BSN done fast then FACT is the way to go.

Hello all thank you for your info, I was wondering for the APW program, how easy was it to get externships? I am an applicant for the APW program and am now just waiting to hear back after the interview (very anxiety-inducing!)
