Thomas Jefferson FACT Program

Published

Hi.

I have been accepted into the TJU FACT program that begins in May but the orientation isn't until a week before classes begin and I would like to get a better idea of the scheduling. I know it's 5 days a week but does anyone have some more specific info? i have to arrange for child care and transportation and a general idea of the class/clinical hours would be helpful.

also...anyone else out there starting the program with me in May?

Hi guys,

I am just curious, why did you decide to go into FACT and become a nurse, if you have Bachelors already in different field and, probably, can get a job by that speciality that you just finished your study?

You may not answer, if you don't want.

I am just curious.....:)

Well, in my case, my intention was to take up nursing. I entered college as a nursing major. However, my GPA was short and did not make it in, so I had to shift gears and focus more on health related classes so my prerequisites and previous courses would not go to waste. My school pretty much put "reject nursing students" (as harsh as that sounds, its pretty much what it is) into a program they call Health Studies/Health Science. So when I graduate in May I'll have a Bachelor of Science in Health Studies, and I decided to minor in Psychology as well. I would pursue a career in that field, but truth is, I don't know what Health Studies/Health Science majors would get into...health insurance maybe? I honestly don't know. But hey, its a degree right? I sorta look at it from a different perspective now...when I'm all finished with school, I'll have 2 degrees and a minor. Not too bad, right?

I'm also kind of glad that I did not get into nursing right away...maybe it was a sign when my GPA fell short, that I was not ready yet, or maybe it was not the field I should get into. But all this time I have thoroughly thought about it and it IS the field I want to get into and with this accelerated program I feel like I can put my whole heart and mind into it, and I am ready for the challenge! :)

Thanks for the response, I was just curious to see what the turn-around time was after your application was complete...I checked my status online and it was complete as of yesterday so now I'm just playing the waiting game ;) Do you know what the application preference column is for on the online app page? Does Jefferson use a ranking system of some sort?

I have no idea what the application preference column is for! The default was "no" or "none" and I left it that way. It MAY be for students who apply to multiple programs; perhaps they indicate their #1 program choice that way? I know that in some of the MS/PhD programs at Jeff, students can apply to more than one program.

Yes, Jeff uses a ranking system, but I don't know what the parameters of it are. The admissions counselor told me that they do need some way of "quantifying" applicants. But from what I can see they don't make their decisions strictly by the numbers; they look at the total person. Probably the ranking has to do with your GPA, whether you've finished your prerequisites and other things I can't think of at this hour of the morning. :) Don't stress about that; I was unaware of it until this week. One of the schools I applied to last year DID go strictly by the numbers, and it was annoying to hear them talk about how Excel "spits out" the list of students they should accept. They didn't even interview students. I called them In The Box Thinkers. :chuckle I wouldn't call the people at Jeff In The Box Thinkers!

Also, applying early is good, so you're good there, too.

Good luck with your app!

Anyone hear anything yet?

Hmmm...I thought this thread had gone a little quiet :) I haven't heard anything yet, my application was complete on the 11th...boooo! hehe

I got a letter this past weekend telling me that they have not received my GRE/MAT scores. Honestly, I didn't take the GRE/MAT because I didnt think I had to, but i guess they really do enforce the 3.2 GPA. I think mine was a 3.0 or 3.1. I don't want to take the test now because I'm taking classes right now, so I figured I should just wait until December when this semester is done so I can send them an updated transcript and maybe my GPA would surpass the 3.2 requirement. I just don't want to waste time taking the GRE or MAT because they aren't easy tests to just take and get over with...GREs are like the SATs with a math, reading and writing section, and the MAT questions are ALL analogies (I looked over some practice questions and they are pretty difficult if you don't have any background info on how to answer them)...

I guess I need to wait til after December for an answer back from them...

No, I haven't heard anything yet. Actually, the lady from admission told me that she was going to make a decision at the end of September and, probably, we should expect our aceptance letters at the beginning of October. According to their time frame that I read on their web site, the students who applied before the 15th of September should receive the response not later than on the 22d of October.

Hopefully soon!!!!:)

I went to one of the counseling group sessions with Niki at Jefferson...and she was mentioning to the students who needed to take the GRE or the MAT that they didn't really put a big emphasis on scores. In fact, she said that the MAT was much easier, and to just take it and get it over with and don't worry about the score. Just thought you might like to know, it's something to think about!! :)

With that knowledge in hand, I agree you might want to just take the MAT and get it over with. If you wait until December, they MIGHT fill up the class by that time.

When I had my interview a couple of weeks ago, she said I should hear something in a couple of weeks. But maybe the Dean is waiting for more people to be interviewed and is planning to send out a big batch of letters at one time.

I know the admissions counselor is on a recruiting trip, so if you call her, just be aware of that.

Glad it wasn't just me... :)

I was afraid they would fill up if I waited until December...

If I had to choose between the two tests, I would choose the MAT. I can always buy a practice book or something to help me prepare. I guess it would be easier since the questions are all analogy based. Thanks for the heads up! I will definitely look into it now.

Yes, I agree with AtomicWoman! I can tell you from my last year experience that I applied late December/beginning January and I wasn't accepted, because there were 3 seats left and 30 applicants by that time. So, it is better not to put off, if you really want to be there next year.

Fortunately, I didn't have to take MAT or other tests, because my GPA was high enough. I was lucky, at least, in that:)

OK, so here's the website for the test:

http://pearsonassess.com/haiweb/Cultures/en-US/site/Community/PostSecondary/Products/MAT/mathome.htm

You can find testing centers from that page, and you can take a practice test, too.

Dang! It's only an hour test. Much better than that GRE I took so many years ago. :)

Good luck and get your app in so you can join us in May! (Assuming my letter actually arrives and it has good news. LOL)

Thank you!

I went on the site the other day actually and found that my school administers the MAT...so luckily I don't have to travel far to take it. I went to the store n bought a MAT practice booklet today...i should start looking stuff over now so I can take the test relatively soon...my school offers it every Wednesday afternoon so scheduling doesn't look too bad. I hope I get to join you guys in May :(
