Okay - I have this patient....a male, young, 23yrs. He has a private room. There's a young woman there with him. I assumed its his wife/girlfriend by the way they're acting towards each other....calling each other 'honey'. So around 2am, Im making my rounds, go into the room and the patient and this girl is in bed with each other spooning...sleeping.
Whoa! Im like.....UH...huh?? She wakes up...gets out of bed. Patient looks fine...I leave. Im at the nurse's station. The girl stops by and leaves me a note with her phone number in case I need to get a hold of her if something comes up. She leaves the floor. The note says she's his sister. I dont know what to say???? This is waaay to freaky for me!!!
I'd have to say that if this freaked you out, you are probably being a little naive. One of the funniest incidents I've seen was when I was working in a CCU. We had a 22 yr old guy who had used a little too much cocaine and had some chest pain. All the rooms had been quiet a while, we thought all the visitors had gone. About 2am, his monitor when flat and all the alarms went off. 5 nurses, a resident and a fellow rushed to the room thinking we were about to call a code. We threw open the curtains and there he was, receiving a little oral satisfaction from his girlfriend. You should have seen the look on her face. We told him to keep his leads on.
When I was working w/ pt's in the BMTU who very very ill but long term their SO sometimes slept with them even though there was a cot nearby. They could lose them at anytime and wanted to grab some intimacy anytime they could. We always knocked before entering,I'm sure the pts were too sick to do anything but the close contact of their loved one calmed them. I had a pt who was recently extubated but very anxious and not able to receive antianxiety meds because of his respiratory status. I tried talking to him and giving whatever meds I could but the only way he calmed down was when his wife laid down with him and put her arms around him.
It's darn inconvenient when you go to weigh them with the bed scale and there's more than one on the bed though. Sheesh!
Human touch is powerful, and sometimes a little spooning works a hell of a lot better than a Restoril.
I have had three couples (married) that chose to squeeze into our little beds. If I remember correctly they were all scheduled for open heart within days.
I have never had a family member attempt to sleep in the bed with anyone high risk, coated in tubes, dressings or catheters, or critically ill.
