This is the stupidest thing I have ever done.

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I did something so stupid that it astounds me. I was working a third shift last night and decided to ride a soiled linen cart like superman, oh I hope no one from work hears about this. Well after about two feet on the linen cart one of the wheels snaps off, I roll of it and land in the floor with a linen cart on top of me. I went and got the housekeeping/laundry woman who takes it to the laundry room and puts a sign on the cart, basically "cart broke". The nurse and I quickly scrambled to make up the "truth". I am sore all over tonight. I attribute it to lack of sleep and temporary insanity brought on by listening to a resident screaming for her medicine for 10 hours, having one woman use her clip alarm as a call light despite the fact that her roomate has one too and has recently developed a bad habit of getting up and falling very hard (basically me running up and down the hall trying to keep roommate from falling only to find out she's too cold and wants the blanket pulled up. Plus I took one woman to the BSC about 20 times last night, she fights against you trying to position herself the way she wants and it just makes me crazy!!!!! Anyway, I am basically waiting for them to call me and tell me I am fired or that the "truth" didn't fly. It was made of PVC pipe, I guess they can fix it by going to the hardware store. I would even be willing to pay for the pipe it takes to fix it. It was PVC for goodness sakes, I should have known better than to think it would support me.

First of all, I was more concerned with Chad injuring himself because if he had, he would not have been able to care for his residents. Now that it is done and over with, he has thought twice. He did acknowledge that he destroyed the facility's property and promised to be better. I commend him for that. And yes, I do know that soiled linen is placed into separate bags... I used to work in a nursing home. But it is still a "soiled" linen cart.

I'm sorry baby&mommynurse,

But we can all go through life thinking what if, the thing is he didn't hurt himself. I feel as professionals we are all very good at judging others for their mistakes, even though we are taught not to be. This was a genuinely funny story, a story of a guy who needed to let off some steam at work and it all went a bit awry. So he came onto the site to vent, and ended up getting slated by behaviour monitors. We've all had funny things happen, or done things we shouldn't (and I won't believe anyone who says they haven't). The thing is we need to stop taking life so seriously. Can we not read the story, see it for what it is, have a laugh, make sure he's ok, and let it go without ANALYSING AND JUDGING. I personally had a good laugh at his antics, and am glad he wasn't hurt in the process. Let it go, life is hard enough.

Having fun when you work in health care is kinda iffy. My favorite was standing on two IV poles and skating down the hall in a race. Yeh you could get caught and fired for being stressed and trying desperately to make some fun so you could have the endorphins to survive your shift. Survival of the fittest and most creative rules! I also am an amateur artist and draw funnies when things get really stressed at work. Everyone laughs and gets on with the work in a different frame of mind. My hardest job is making the depressed, burned out and overwhelmed also laugh and enjoy work too.

But that's the whole point. The mere thought of someone catching you makes it even more devilish and worthwhile, as long as folks don't get hurt, then I don't see where the problem is. YA just have to let go sometimes, or you would end up a flippin' gibbering wreck.

CHAD when you get to be my age i hope you are still able to say THAT WAS THE STUPIDEST THING I EVER DID

Hey y'all things have settled down some. I got a few nights of sleep, no one from work has said a word about it, I talked to the DON today at a career fair at the college and she said that she hadn't heard anything about it. I told her the "TRUTH" and she acted like it wasn't a big deal to her. I love career fairs, tons and tons of free pens! The nursing facility gave me a free pen and then I went to the local hospital table and was talking to them about getting a job over there. Then I found out that I can get my EMT for $500 and that their is a job opening up in the library that I have been eyeing. Things may be looking up! :)

Yeh this was a funny story. Sorry Studious, I misread your post.

Way back when, we used to have wheelchair races, we would ride the dirty linen carts to the shutes. They were made of metal with cloth bags. In the summer in the parts of the building that didn't have air conditioning we kept each other wet with 60cc syringes full of water. No one ever got hurt. We never got caught. All our residents were well cared for. And we had a great time doing our job. In which the residents benefited because we were able to let loose some steam!

As a former third shifter I can remember how tired we got some nights and I would get just plain goofy. I can remember one night when my coworkers and I were all so tired I decided to entertain all and liven things up. I was doing my best Tracy Partridge impersonation playing a plastic wash basin like a tambourine singing I Think I Love You when I hit my hand just right and hyperextended 4 fingers. Thought we were going to have to cut my wedding ring off, fortunately we got to the KY quickly enough and got it off. My hand swelled up and hurt like crazy for several days. I have since retired my tambourine. :Melody:

Almost every CNA on the PM shift at my facility has done the following things at least once:

1. Stand on the VERA lift and have someone run down the hall pushing them. Since it's a lift that puts the resident in a standing position we stand where the resident's feet are supposed to go. It's fun because you're going backwards.

2. Get in a (clean) sling and have another CNA lift you off a chair/couch with the Vander lift, just to see what it feels like.

3. Stand on the edge of the food cart (the big one that holds all the dinner trays) to see if your partner on the other side will notice as you go down the hall.

Boy was I missing out on alot of fun....back when I was CNA, I was always way overthinkikg things. I used to think I had more responsibility than I had. Not that I would ever do anything a nurse was supposed to. do....I was just always so nervous.... went home and always had nightmares.....Now, I sometimes wish I had those days back!!! ( not in any way saying cna's got it easy...):uhoh21:

[Get in a (clean) sling ] Like it :rotfl:

Oooops we're talking LTC here. When I said flatten a resident I didn't mean a pt, I meant like a physician-in-training type of resident. Sorry about the poor choice of words. :uhoh21:
