Thinking of quiting after 2 years

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi all.........I work for a major healthcare org in rehab medicine. I've been there for over 2 years and really 'loved' going to work. I don't anymore, I'll try to make this short.

In 2 1/2 yrs, we have gone through 5 managers. We've lost alot of good nurses/techs and we are treated like 'you-know-what' by our 'mother hospital'.

We have been filling out our own schedules for almost a year and since we have weekend option nurses, we only work 1 weekend every 4-5 weeks. Now before some of you make comments, I know this is a rare thing and believe me, I'm thankful for it!! When our latest manager quit (stress from higher ups), the 'mother hospital' took over our scheduling and when it came out friday, all #@&& broke loose. We were put down for shifts we don't normally work....ie: I do 12hr days and they have me doing 8hr days and evenings. They gave a PD nurse all my 12hr shifts and I'm also working 2 weekends in a row...one nurse is not working ANY weekends. I requested off the weekend before my son ships out, but guess what?? I'm working plus I'm working the evening before his plane leaves.......I was hired for 12 hr days and have been working them, until now. They didn't even ask if I was avaliable for evening shift?? I'm losing hours.....one week I'm getting 32 and the PD is getting 44!!

They said they 'tried' to be fair for everyone..........well, I was so mad I cried and honey, that is mad! We get called off so nurses from other hospitals can 'get their hours' and PD/PRN nurses can get extra hours. We are full-time. We have voiced our complaints and they say they are 'concerned and listening', but the same things keeps going on.

Well, I have put in my apps for about a dozen other places. I just can't work there anymore and the hard part is........I love working with the other nurses and the physicians. I know EVERYBODY there and the thought of 'starting over' again is about to eat me up.........

I need some feed back about this...........should I stay and 'ride it out', wait for a new manager........win the lotto????

Thanks for listening and thanks for your opinions, I really need some input here.

Thank Heaven for unions. I have no complaints since working for unionized hospitals. I can't advise you much except, the biggest clue to me is FIVE MANAGERS in 2 years? Seems to me you have an adminstration/management problem, and that translates to misery for the workers. I would be checking around for my options away from this hari-kari work environment. I don't think good things lie ahead for you there. Best wishes and I hope you can work things out!
I disagree with your Einstein comment/quote. Reagan used the military and strategic buildup of weaponry (preparation) to stop the cold war and destroy communism without a shot being fired.

In this case the best defense for the United States and the world from war propagated by the communists was a well prepared and efficient, though unused, WAR MACHINE. Thank God for Reagan and the Department of Defense. I just had to comment - this quote really bugs me.

I hear what your saying. I have worked at a childrens clinic for 3 years and now they are reconsidering my position. Am I just the floor RN or am I in charge of all the other MA's, scheduling, ordering, etc. A month has gone by and I'm ready to throw in the towel and look for another job. Everywhere I've been theres always politics. I guess if you can bypass all the B.S. and like what your doing for the community, stay there. I'm still not sure what I want to do when I grow up.

Sorry the quote bothers you. You have the right to disagree, but I feel it's appropriate. As for your belief that the WAR MACHINE (just listen to the sound of that, ugh)---- and the Reagan administration----were "bleessings from God of some sort, well I take extreme issue to that. I could expound on why for pages, but it is not appropriate here. Really, this quote and your issue with it is in no way germane to the conversation in this thread and if you have issues like this in the future, please PM me instead. Until then, if my quote(s) bother you, don't read them; that would be the best solution to your problem. Have a good day. :)

dig that, deb. talk about coming out of nowhere.

Did I miss something here??????? Seems that I missed something in regards to nursemjb's comments.

Anyway, I'm still looking and nothing that 'feels' right has come along. I really hate getting up in the morning........well, I actually hate that anyway, but knowing that I'm going to that place to work is getting to be so depressing!!

You guys are so wonderful and so supportive, I wish we could all work together in a great hospital where they paid you what your worth and you get every weekend off.............opps, sorry about that, I think I dozed off and was dreaming :rotfl:

I am so sorry to hear that. It seems like good things come to an end. I just can't stomach full time positions anymore it seems like full time get screwed over worse than any status! It is getting to the point that if you work for a hospital w/o a union you are working at your own risk. Now, I just work per diem and do contracts I purchase my health and have my own retirement. I love nursing but the bureaucratic nonsense that is going on I rather just do my plain ole nursing. I hope things will get better for you. It is hard to start over when you are so happy with a facility to begin with. I am learning to never get attached to any place so when they start dogging nurses I can walk away. I recently had to resign from a facility that has incompetence and nurses who think they are actually running the unit.

I know it's been awhile for this topic, but I wanted to let you all know what has been going on. I've been put on 'light duty' until the end of the month and I'm working at another facility........answering the phones, scheduling patients, filing.......etc. If I'm not better by my appointment, the doc wants to do surgery. All I can say is that since I saw him and he moved my affected body part, it has been hurting more than ever!! I'm doing the exercises, but man it hurts.

My hubby says to wait and have the surgery since it's been a problem since the first of the year......I don't really want to have surgery, but the time off would be ok..........is it ok to say that??

Anyway, my delema is this: I've been offered a 'case managment' position and don't know if I can 'legally' take it, being on 'light duty' and what if I have to have surgery??

I'll be calling my attorney and checking with him, but what do you all think??

My advice to you is: Go to work at the mother hospital and tell them that you want to work PD in the Rehab unit.....if you can't beat em....join em

Not sure if this is helpful as the disability and work comp laws are very different state to state. I did work as a Work Comp case manager for many years.

If the essential functions are usual, case management would qualify as light duty. Generally, your MD would have to sign off on it or agree that it meets his/her definition of light duty. In my state, if you refuse a legitimate offer of light duty, you no longer qualify for disability payments of work comp payments.

Be careful with any refusal of offers of work your MD says is appropriate for you. It could jeopardize your rights.

My advice is leave a sinking ship. Tally up the scorecard. Are there more reasons to stay than to leave?

Wonder what the OP wound up doing....she was considering quitting in June. Any news, NANNA????

This is some saga! Nanna, is this a Healthsouth owned facility by any chance? And what are you having surgery for? Is this a work relateed injury or a previous existing ? Thanks for the updates.
