Thinking about joining Army Nurse Corps...

Are you trying to evaluate the option of going in now with your BSN or waiting to go in with your MSN? What is your timeline for the MSN? Depending on when you'd graduate.. or if you could later do some p/t via distance.. that could change things. Either way it takes a while to start putting your packet together. Depending on how long your grad date is you might be able to use the same packet regardless of which two scenarios you are looking at.

My 2 cents.. I'd look at going in with BSN ... so I'd be a future prospect for the Army to send me to go get my masters...

If I understand correctly you will have a MSN in health systems which is non clinical. So you would still be a 66H (nurse). Even with your MSN, with 1-2 yrs experience, you probably will be a 2LT. You will NOT come in as a Captain......I know this from personal experience (I have 6 + yrs ICU experience and 2 Masters of Science....one is a MSN, plus 1yr Army Reserve and I will come in as 1LT to Active duty).

I have dealt with 2 healthcare recruiters (reserve & regular Army) both of whom have been upfront and honest. Be clear with your requests and read all your documents before signing.......the timeline is extensive for application to commissioning and the RN quotas are "said to be complete for this fiscal yr"....so inquire when they will be accepting new applicants. You may want to do a search on this website to glean the information already discussed.

rn's go in as either 2ly or 1 lt then get constructive credit for the rest of the time

for example i got my bsn in 2003 (got my adn before that in 1996), anyhow.....they commissioned (12/06/08) me as a 1lt then gave me 3 years constructive credit toward cpt.

I had lunch with my health care recruiter last week, who said the exact same thing. Can't hurt to do the paper drill, though, if you want to shoot for the next FY (begins 1 Nov 09).

Also how "athletic" do you have to be? I work out regularly but I don't consider myself a hardcore soldier that can do a million pushups! And come on I'm old lol...

If you didn't see before... there are now commissioning opportunities for nurses up to the age of 60 with no prior service... if you are 28 you are a young stud / studette.

physically wise you need to pass the apft. Not hard to pass but I know in ROTC they strive for officers to max it. Although most of the soon to be officers will branch into jobs that require more strenuous activity (i.e. infantry) For Direct commission like yourself passing will suffice. there are charts all over the net to see your age bracket minimums.
