I start LPN school on August 20. My husband and I have a 15 month old, and we would really like to keep our kids about 2-3 years apart. Our plan is to try for a summer 2013 baby since I will have the entire summer off school, then finish up in the fall. We are going to be very careful about timing, as to not to be due during a semester. Our daughter already goes to my sister-in-law's home daycare, and she said she would be more than happy to watch any future kids also.
Any thoughts on being pregnant while in school?
Just to note I asked if you went to community college because I wanted to know if you could sit out a semester. My LPN program does not go by semesters so if you are unable to complete it you have to reapply and pray they will accept you the following year even though you left. Is that the same way your school works or can you actually sit out for a semester?

It's not a community college. It's called Lively Technical Center. I don't think they let you sit out and then come back.

That's the way our program is. Failing or leaving the program isn't an issue of being a semester behind or playing catch up. We are terminated from the program and get to start at the very beginning. I thought we were unusual because so many people on here mention they fell behind, but I guess it's more common than I though!

Well let's say if god forbid anything went wrong this is something to consider. I'm sure you worked hard to get into the program and you wouldn't want to start from scratch if anything were to happen. I think I would have a nervous breakdown if that ever happened. lol. I know you said you were waiting on an alternate list for a R.N. program but it if were me I wouldn't mess with a sure thing. Best of luck to you and I know you will make whatever decision is right for yourself and your family! :)
Yes I have heard people say more often than not that they feel behind and I thought they were so lucky because I certainly will not be getting that opportunity lol. I know that most schools that are not community colleges do not operate by semesters and therefore they cannot have a teacher just reteach a class. The students and teachers need to move on to the next class.

Yes, I was chosen as an alternate for Tallahassee Community College's nursing program for Fall 2012. They accepted 48 people and I was alternate number 14, but they only called alternates 1 through 4. I was disappointed but LPN school was my back up and I was relieved and excited to get in. My friend didn't get in TCC's program either but she got in the same LPN program as me. We are both glad that we are going through this together.
I definitely do not want to start from scratch lol. I wish I would've known 3 or 4 years ago what I wanted to do as a career, I could have already been a nurse.

Agreed! I'm 21 so all my friend are posting their B.S.N. degrees on FB and I just grit my teeth and wish I would have went to school straight out of H.S. But it's better late than never!

I know the feeling! 8 years ago I thought about nursing and decided it wasn't for me, went to college for other things, and now full circle back to nursing and everyone else and their mother did it before me! And I'll probably be graduating into a cruddy job market instead of an awesome one 8 years ago. Grrr.

I'm also 21. I went to college in high school (dual enrolled) and after high school but kept changing my mind lol. Finally decided what I wanted to do about a year and a half ago. I had to go back and do prerequisites for the RN program and then I didn't get in. Yes I agree, better late than never!
So I'm going to come at this from a different angle. I went through nursing school and my first job and yes they were hard and took a lot of time. I can't imagine having a baby during this time, its probably very rough.
My viewpoint is from the child's perspective. My mom had me right before perusing a phd program and starting a very difficult career. It took her quite a while to get on her feet and have a stable life again. I wish very often that she would have waited to have me, like she did my sister, because I didn't see her hardly at all until I was about six. I carried it with me through my childhood, this feeling that mommy was too buddy for me and when I asked for attention I would be bothering her. Although this was not the case later in my childhood that feeling never really went away. So moral of the story is think about how the timing of your child could not only affect your career but the well being of the baby you wish to have. Would putting it off by just a few years change that much?
Just my two cents :)

i hit enter before finishing. It is something i have to go back someday i hope to finish and i still get e-mails from my school every months about things to do to get back.Your husband needs to be realistic about nursing school not focus on your associate degree.I understand what you are going through because baby fever is real, fight it and wait till you finish and secure a job.Good luck with whatever your decision is.
