Things you wish nursing school would have taught you?

Published

Hello! Any nurses want to share some things you wish nursing school would have taught you, tips for nursing students, tricks you've learned on the job, etc?

This year will be my first year in nursing school & I thought it would be cool to hear some words of advice beforehand! ?

Specializes in Medical Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplant.

Participate in rounds. Ask questions always, especially when the order or plan of care does not make any sense. Don’t feel bad when you turn down an OT shift. Know the number for security office.

Specializes in ER.

Good shoes are worth every penny. If your feet start to hurt, go to physio, change your shoes, fix the problem sooner rather than later. I might help to change shoes midway through the shift.

I buy my scrubs for the pockets, not for style.

If you are getting in a conflict with someone say "well I'll have to look that up" or "let me check on it and get back to you." Find a chance to walk away and reflect, even for five minutes. Remember it's their crisis, not yours, and the PC resolution may be to just let it go. You can always send a letter to complain/ask advice later.

Wear compression socks!

My mom, now retired after 50+ years, taught me both of these early on, when cute patterns (shoes and socks both) were not prevalent! In my now late 50s, my legs, feet, and most of the time my back, are in relatively good shape compared to those younger than be who wear whatever is cheap but cute shoe wise, and state that they hate compression socks...I hear them complain constantly. To me, falls under the umbrella heading of "Take Care of Yourself, So That You May Take Care of Others"...

Funny you say that- the cuter compression socks are cheaper too but the quality is meh. I wear Pro Compression-high quality, a little more expensive but totally worth it. I always wished they would make more cute designs lol. I don’t care though, I own every color of their Elite socks even though I hate some of them like red and forest green ?
