it is not a new concept that positivity can help speed the healing or recovery of sick people, but i wanted to see how many nurses actually believe in the power of positive thought....
1dr. masaru emoto, a water researcher from japan, performed thought experiments on water molecules. he discovered that when these molecules were exposed to positive thought (accomplished in part by writing positive messages on the bottle of water itself), that beautiful geometric shapes would form as discovered when examining the molecules under a microscope, whereas negative thought created asymmetric, erratic shapes. this discovery that thought has a literal impact on our reality is not just found here.
2according to quantum physics, everything is energy in motion, including our thoughts. and those thoughts tend to attract similar energies. thus, positivity will attract positivity.
3for proof of such an occurrence we simply look at the placebo effect. i once had a patient who was always in pain. he received roxicet for the pain but requested more than permitted quite often. so with the doctor's permission, my partner and i began giving him vitamin c tablets which quite resembled the roxicet. the results were positive. the patient felt relief, just from his belief that he was receiving actual pain medication. studies on patients with parkinson's disease, who experience symptoms based on an insufficient production of dopamine, go even a step further than that. they found that when some patients received a placebo, not only did the symptoms of parkinson's disease (such as shuffling gait or hand tremors) decrease, but there was also an increase of dopamine in the brain. this is a true demonstration of the power of belief and positive thought actually affecting our lives at the cellular level.
with this type of proof before us, does it not make sense then that believing negativity and reinforcing negative thoughts daily could have the opposite effect, and actually decrease the happiness we experience and even promote illness? definitely!
4according to ayurveda, the medical field of india, "disease starts in the mind with thought. by cultivating the garden of your mind and generating positive thoughts, you can prevent disease."
all things are possible, and in the words of emily dickinson, "all but death can be adjusted".
do you believe that positivity can help speed the healing or recovery of sick people?
The power of positive thinking works and if it doesn't, it is because there is that little voice somewhere in the back of your mind whispering "failing" words to you.
I was right there with ya until this part. Not that this was your intention but I have seen this statement used in a pathetic attempt to justify poor results related to alternative type medical treatments. Like the clinics in third world countries that prey on sick people especially those with terminal cancer. If the person's cancer returns or never resolved it is blamed on their lack of faith in the "cure".

No no, it was not my intent and I apologize, but it is difficult to explain the law of attraction when I am NOT an expert on it. But I believe it and I've seen it work daily in my life. When dealing with the law of attraction, you have to think about positive results and goals. IF, you begin to think something is not possible or "bad" thoughts, you actually suppress the law of attractions power or your good thoughts of what you want and so, you attract what you think about. It's complicated for me to explain properly through online words. If you watch the movie or read the book, you will understand what I was trying to and am trying to say. Or, you can google it. There is a ton of information on it and I believe Albert Einstein was the one who figured it out. I might be mistaken.
According to the law of attraction, everything and everyone in your reality is a result of your thoughts. It's goes along with quantum physics, but quantum physics takes it a bit further and is far more difficult to understand. I hope that clears up what I was saying:)

Oh no worries! I figured that was what you meant just wanted to mention that sometimes it can be used for bad as well as good. A friend of mine with Lupus had a big blow up with her sister because sis thinks that if she would only be more positive her disease wouldn't have progressed the way it has.
There is a "Universal Law", called The Law of Attraction. Positive things come to those who think positive things will happen. It is proven, over and over and over again through this universal law. There's a book and movie called "The Secret" which talks in detail about it.
There is also a movie called "What the Bleep do we Know". It is about quantum physics which is not as hard to understand as you might think. Two of the people i quoted in my initial post are in that movie (though only briefly).
When you look at physics, and quantum physics, this existence we share becomes much more mysterious. Did you know that Einstein's special theory of relativity proves that time travel is real? People travel into the future everyday! Also, quantum physics has discovered that matter (electrons) are both particles and waves at the same time. If you are not looking it is a wave, but as soon as you look, it collapses into a particle, as if it knew it was now being observed. What this means is that an object can be in two or more places simultaneously, and still be that one object. It is called, particle/wave duality, and further shows that we influence the world around us, just by observing it. These seemingly science fiction examples are real, and illuminate a world that we know very little about. With open minds, we could stumble upon some amazing discoveries about a larger role we are playing at shaping our own realities.:)
Do you think a negative thought would be better? I think people can " will themselves to death" Elderly men who lose their wifes usually check out quickly. I believe positive thoughts make the loss of life easier for the ones who are left. Everything you could do, you did. Just think how bad the people who believe it is all over ,just throw in the towel, feel after the death. What if I had tried to pray, what if I had believed they would improve, what if? Death is final, you can't go back. Being positive, in my opinion, is about the ones who will continue living as much as those who will die. We all wil die, but, wouldn't it be great if when the time came the ones who loved us the most felt good about themselves?
The Power of Positive Thought --IF first learned by nurses and THEN
taught by nurses to patients will have a GREAT impact on health care (which is not really health care but disease care).

There is a "Universal Law", called The Law of Attraction. This law is working constantly with everyone and everything at every single second through time. It talks about what you think is what you will attract. Ie. Birds of the same feather, flock together. Like attracts like, etc.Positive things come to those who think positive things will happen. It is proven, over and over and over again through this universal law.
For some, it might be hard to understand, but if you research it and start slowly putting it into play, you will see that it works. As bizarre as it sounds, it works. I've tried and am continually trying to play my life game with it. So far, so good:)

Nurse430+yrs:
Regarding your quote: NO it is not a pathetic attempt to explain away the "failure" of non traditional medicine. Frankly there have been more killed by traditional medicine than non-traditional medicine.
WE/YOU/I do NOT truly KNOW what is going on within another's soul/being etc. They may profess to you on the outside "they" want to live, while on the inside there IS that "death" "transition" wish; we have no way of measuring it or even assessing it. We do know it is there within each of us.
My mother verbalized the wish to live; but yet still held hatred and resentment toward others; these are two polar ideas/ideals and two polar entities cannot occupy the SAME space at the same time; ONE has to take over--the one with most power wins. In this case she chose to give the power over to the hatred and resentment; this manifested itself into Cancer (reseachers have even tracked Cancer events to hurts/losses and unforgiveness that has never been resolved) .So she gave the power to the Cancer that took her; the cancer in her mind and heart that she couldn't let go of.
There IS a lot to the Power of the Spoken Word, The Power of Belief, The Law of Attraction; ...as nurses we NEED to be aware and knowledgable of these areas. Whether or not you choose to believe them yourself...it is important to know about when we are caring for others.
I voted "not sure"....although I do think that negative thought processes can surely interfere with the healing process, I'm not sure that the opposite holds true.
But I'm not in my normal state now, I'm post-op and no matter how much positive thinking I've done every time I'm in the bathroom, I still got a freaking ileus. And my hubby's done everything but break out the pom-poms to encourage everything to "wake up" all the way.
