The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

So I wonder if credit is used to help them decide or if they are just making sure no default

According to their website, credit inquiries are part of the process. I found the quote below on their website. I think in order to rule people out they are pulling credit on all eligible applicants.

Please be advised that a credit and excluded parties list system check will be performed as part of the application process.

I am just making sure that isn't a way for them to decide because my credit is horrible. I don't have any default on loans. All mine are in deferment. But my credit isn't very good.

It was pulled from EXPERIAN credit bureau.

Also, they want to make sure you are NOT delinquent on Federal payment obligations (to include, FHA loans, child support, Federal income taxes, etc). Basicaly anything to do with defaulting on the Federal government. It doesn't have anything to do with if you pay your Visa cards, medical collections.

3. NSP applicants who have a history of not honoring prior legal obligations, as evidenced by one or more of the following factors, may not be selected:

a. Default on a prior service obligation to the Federal government, a State or local government, or other entity, even if the applicant subsequently satisfied that obligation through service, monetary payment or other means;

b. Default on any Federal payment obligations (e.g., Health Education Assistance Loans, FHA Loans, Federal income tax liabilities, federally guaranteed/insured loans such as student or home mortgage loans, etc.) or non-Federal payment obligations (e.g., court-ordered child support payments); or

c. Write off of any Federal or non-Federal debt as uncollectible.

Okay. Well I just ordered a credit report its a free one through freecreditreport and may take up to 2 days...but beats the heck out of paying since I already used my 1 time one. I'm not in default on anything to do w/ the gov. Just not in very good standing w/ other things. What happens when your a single parent and get laid off from your job...not good things.

Yea!!! That is REALLY FANTASTIC news! that means they are moving forward, and they DO NOT pull your credit unless they are planning on giving you the scholarship. That is the BEST indicator, even better than the emails we have gotten. I'm watching mine!

Wow, some of the essays seem a lot longer than mine. I typed up my essays and then pasted them into that form and I had to cut some of my answers to make them fit. I called the call center at the time to ask could I just submit my answers on a separate form because they didn't fit, and they emphasized to me that they had to be under 2500 characters and if it was less, it would have no problem fitting. Guess the call center was wrong once again.

I have no idea if my credit was checked or not.

I don't think my credit was checked...but I'm not sure. The last thing it shows is something from 2008 which I seriously doubt. Oh well I guess I will do the waiting game and see.

Instead of paying for another credit report, if you have already used the free annual one that you get you can always apply for a loan that you know you wont get. In that case, when you are denied they must offer you a free copy of your credit report.

Awww Joe aren't you the smart one :yeah: Oh and on an unrelated subject, is anyone thinking about debinding their books?

Lol--I don't know if it is even worth the trouble. I mean all it is going to tell me is that my credit was checked...doesn't tell me if I get the scholarship or not....

I'm actually in the process of doing that to my med surg book right now. We have a HUGE med surg book and it's used for 3 different courses, so the people at my school debind it and then make 3 separate books for the 3 classes. I have already had the spine cut and I sorted out what chapters are needed for each class. Now I just have to take them to Kinkos to have them put into spiral bound books. It costs $5 for each book. Not too bad. My med surg book is nearly 2000 pgs and weighs about 10lbs, so this is MUCH easier!
