The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

Hi,

I am a 2009-2010 Scholarship Recipient. I will attempt to answer your questions to the best of my ability.

To the best of my knowledge, I believe that you will receive backstipend for whatever months you were enrolled in nursing school and actually taking classes for at least fifteen days. Example, I started nursing school on May 26, 2009, I received backstipend for July, August, September, and October. Even though I started in May, the time frame began for July. Example # 2, if you start classes on August 23, you will probably receive stipend for Septembr and October, becuse even though you started in August, you did not attend classes for fifteen days in August so your backstipend will start for September. I am pretty sure that because my program started so soon, I was one of the lucky ones who received the maximum amount of funds. I remember on dispersement day (11/13/2009) the forum was full of complaints. I just looked back and my payment was for $6810.78. This included July, August, September, October backstipend ($1269.00) and ORC payment of around $1800.00. I remember some people complaining because their payment was only the ORC payment. I also can remember one guy saying that his deposit was on $800, which I'm sure was a mistake because that's not even the whole ORC payment. I'm saying all this to say that no everyone does not get the full backstipend pay. If so, all of the recipients last year would have had the same direct deposit amount. It depends on how long you've been in school.

Also, the stipend does not end in the summer if you are not taking classes. I did not take classes this summer and I received my stipend every month.

Hope this helps!

According to KH we all get monthly stripends from July 2010 to July 2011 (if you only are getting one year of aid) regardless of whether you take summer classses or not. The amount of the check you receive in Oct depends on what you filled out on your W4 because taxes are taken out of the lump some based on the cost of your tuition and the monthly stripend so obviously everyone's checks would be different unless they filled out the exact same thing on the W4 and had the exact same amount in tuition. Hope that helps!

Oh also the 15 day thing is like most colleges. You have to be in classes for 15 days before you are considered as being enrolled for that semester and to be eligible for your financial aid.

Makes sense with the W4 thing.

I talked to CF just a little while ago and she said that everyone will get a backpay from July, so everyone's first payment should have 4 months worth of stipend pay plus the ORC payment...regardless of when you started your classes.

Also, for those who signed additional years on the contract, as long as those years are granted then you will receive payments in September. So for me I don't graduate until Dec of 2011, and I signed my contract to fund for the 2011-2012 year, so then CF said that I will still receive a stipend payment over the summer months.

Finally, for anyone still wondering about how pell grants affect tuition billing...your business office will send and invoice to HRSA that will say what your tuition costs are minus any grants you receive...scholarships from other sources do not have to be subtracted, just any grants that are federal funded. Loans also do not get subtracted. So for example, if your tuition is $5000 a semester and you get $3000 in grants, then your school would bill HRSA for $2000. Scholarships can be stackable depending on the conditions of each scholarship, and any private and or federal stafford loans are up to your discretion whether or not you want to send them back or keep them...if you keep them then you would get them as a refund check from your school for you to pocket.

Hope this helps anyone who is confused...it sure helped me!

Sounds nice. At least it's clarified. I plan to send back my unsubsidized loans. On the federal site it say no fees/ interest will be charged if loans are sent back within 120 days. I'm up in the air about subsidized. Though, I wont do anything with them until there is money in my account from HRSA...

I kept both my sub and unsub loans for this semester...thats basically rent and car payment so that I don't have to work...I'm excited about spring semester because I know I will get to keep my scholarships that I already had...I'm thankful to have the $1200 a month, but unfortunately it's not enough to cover rent, daycare, car and whatnot so thankfully I can keep the extra scholarship money to help pay ahead on stuff. I just keep thanking the lord for the opportunity to have the scholarship and now just patiently wait to see what happens next. (well maybe not so patiently...lol)

Umm no I'm not implying that everyone will get a stipend from July 2010-July 2011, I'm saying that next summer if you are signed up for 2 years of aid you will get stipend over the summer even if not in school. However, whether you get July 2010 stipend depends on your enrollment in school for those past months. Also, sunnyray, I wan't saying that i was one hundred percent positive of the information, i was giving my opinion of what I thought and what has been the case with myself.

I saw posted on another site that everyone will get backdated pay from July due to an increase in funding and that it was changed from past years where students did have to be in class for at least 15 days... How this will work for past recipients I'm not sure. I guess we will know when the money is in the account hopefully that is true :-)

Yes this is right...there is more funding this year than there has been in the past. So everyone will get backpaid regardless of when classes start....which is different from past years in which only those who has classes for the 15 days thing were able to get backpaid. This year they just standardized everything so that everyone's contract runs the same.

pattylmt and dcoffill :

Thank u both sooo much!!! I truly feel bad for both of u and I'm flabbergasted as to why neither of u got it, but both your support and your situations make me feel better about my loss ;-}

Having said that, I wondered why I wasn't on my primary Prof's class roster, but just assumed it was because I changed sections very late in the summer. So I went into the registrar's office today to add a class and was told I was accepted for summer but not fall. (She even showed me the computer screen, as if that would explain the problem to me, but it was incomprehensible, how could I be only summer when I took classes all last year, and just as importantly had been in the business office the last week and seen my bill - which I never got in the mail, apparently this was all why)

So she walked over to admissions and had it fixed, apparently it had been put in the computer that I began the program and finished the program the same day.

So right when I had truly come to terms with the whole thing, now I have a whole new worry, did my school tell them I was finishing the program in August and therefore they were like, hey she doesn't need this ...

I halfjokingly mentioned this to her and she said she didn't think that had happened, and I have no real reason to believe it did, but ...

I'm pretty sure if that did happen, I don't want to know ;-}

Hey Gypsy,

I meant to tell you that on Monday, my prof was calling your name, she had you on her class roster. She didnt call your name on wed though, it must have all been smoothed out by then.
