Hi All!
I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.
I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.
When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.
So I want to know are there any men out there?
Great thread. My husband just started A&P this semester and should start nursing classes next fall. He will be 50 when he graduates.Question for the moderators?????????
How about making a forum for the men? Not the the men need to be separated from the women but just to make it easier, heck each state has it's own forum.
Sorry if this was already mentioned but I've only read about 6 pages of posts so far.
I start my nursing classes in 6 weeks and will be 52 when I graduate. Good luck to you and your husband. I loved A&P and am in micro now at night.
I was a medic in the Army so I'm very comfortable in the clinicals. The hardest thing about nursing school is listening to the complaining from the younger students and the liberal rants from the instructors.
Hubby was an EMT and AF medic (RET) and I hear the same thing from him all the time.
I am not of the male gender, but i commend you and all you other guys for sticking with it. I think that having guys in healthcare is great. I'm a senior nursing student and unfortunately my class doesn't have any but the next class has i think 4 out of 34 students. i go to a small privite college (university in january) and the program is like 5-6 years new.
one of my best clinical learning experiences was with my first "male nurse" he's from africa and man is he REALLY good at what he does. i wanted to recruit him to come to our school and teach us. first time any of the other students met him we all agreed that he was amazing at what he does and in teaching us.
i think every year there will be more and more guy nurses as awareness of "not JUST being a womans profession." Hospitals are looking to hire more and more male nurses because of demand.
just wanted to say keep up the good work and may God bless your future in nursing.

Manna my anatomy class is great! It's kinda tough balancing it with DePaul but im doing mkay
I had my first lab practical exam and scored ten points above the class average :)
Great Job!!! Keep up the good work! Make a mental note of how good this feels so if you run into one of those times (and we all have them) where you want to chuck it all and become a lumberjack (thats what I tell everyone I am gonna do), you can look back and say it isn't all bad. Then remind yourself you CAN do this! :balloons:
anatomy was so much fun. oh and you do use it during your core nursing classes. just fyi. lab was awesome. we had fetal pigs and then lamp eyes, brains, and hearts.
anyways, hey do any of your schools use cadavers (spelling?)???
i have my first midterm tomorrow in OB. YIKES!!!
Good luck all in studys and clinicals

Hello all! :)
I'm new to this forum - and new to nursing. I started my nursing program last month - Entry Level MSN. So much study crammed into such an amazingly short period. It's exhausting but the best part is the clinical rotation. This semester we get one full day a week working in a mental health setting. One of the nurses on the ward I was observing was a guy who graduated from my program ten years ago which I thought was pretty cool.
Anyway, just thought I'd say hi.
Regards,
NurseMac
Ps. Yup - we had cadavers in anatomy class. If you can, tutor anatomy the semester after you have taken it. That's what I did and it really made it all stick in my brain much more than just doing the class and taking the tests. :)
-Psych rotation was interesting. my favorite parts were the children and adolescent units and the detox facility we went to. have fun!!! :) i starts peds in 2 weeks.
oh...and i passed my OB midterm. YEAH!!! we have to have an 80% passing grade on everything we do and above a 3.0 GPA. what are the rest of your programs like?
I probably should find another forum so you guys can have your "quality" time together.
bye
I didn't even know lamps /had/ eyes : p

Nurses, I need to interview an FNP for my Professional nursing role class. If anyone can help, please email me at [email protected]. You only have to answer 5 questions and a short background description about yourself. No phone conversation needed
Thanks

In my experience "most" docs don't hassle anyone. Being intimidated about calling/dealing with docs is just part of the learning curve, which IMO usually has more to do with age then gender. I work with 2 guys, the one that graduated last year still doesn't like having to "bother" the docs, I say we're not bothering them, just doing our job and calling them so they can do their job.
