The dreaded topic...lice

Published

I have some parents freaking out about lice..more so about the spread of it. Their child's classroom has 3 cases of lice. I have checked the classmates twice this week, which is already above what my coworkers at other schools in my district do. We have a no nit policy and the kids that have been treated must be cleared by me the return day and every day after for a week.

The mom has been emailing the teacher and wants the class checked every day and notes sent home each day there is a new case. I sent home notification letters Monday and then the AAP handout about lice yesterday. The teacher also sent home her own letter about additional cases and tips/trick (Fairytales, hair up and sprayed, no hugging, etc).

Does anyone have any other helpful resources regarding lice?

For God's sake.

Although, as a child of lawyers, I suppose I owe a debt of gratitude to our over litigious society.

Heck, we don't check the temperature of every child in the class when one of them has a fever...or any other condition; why head lice? This is parent driven hysteria. .

That is such a great point!! I had never thought of it that way, but will keep that in mind when talking to the parents/teachers! Thank you!

I cannot believe this... people are absolutely insane these days! :banghead:

As if the lice drama wasn't enough, now there is a documented case of chickenpox in a kindergarten class! Thankfully all of the students are vaccinated minus one (religious exemption) and that parent wasn't in a frenzy about it.

SOOO happy it is Friday!

My first grade classrooms have been the hub of lice this school year and, this week, the flu.

I second the TGIF! Is it Wine O'clock yet?

AND, just to be clear here...we can be sued if a kid gets lice? We can be sued if we check a kid for lice?

I imagine I can be sued if I also DO NOT check a kid for lice, right?

Saw a post on a Facebook page by a community mom in a tizzy because the school failed to send home a note the instant some kid in her kid's grade was found to be "with lice." She went on a rant about how they freak out and send home a note every time someone gets strep, which she basically said is no big deal, just slap 'em on abx and it's fine, but LICE... now, THEY are the scourge from hell.

I educated her about rheumatic fever, valve damage, and the like and also shared what we learned in nursing school, which is that HEAD LICE ARE A NUISANCE. That is it. (Too bad my kid's school nurse didn't remember that lesson when she treated my kid like a leper when she had lice; maybe I could have sued her for pain and suffering?)

Speaking of lawsuits, I think I spat something out at the "How to go &%$# yourself" fake link above. Also cracking up at the school nurse's comment that it wasn't like she was checking the kids for crabs. No one can make me laugh like my fellow nurses; thank you!

Yes, wannabe- Since, for most of us, we are the only medical person in the building. It is so awesome that we have a whole, diverse group of cool people that really "get" each other.

Wonderful, wonderful!! :)
