Unfortunately this is the sad reality of being a CNA. The work that we do is worth a lot more. The real problem in increasing CNA wages would be figuring out where the funds are going to come from. For example, at an LTC there is an RN, LPN and two CNA's on a hall (just imagine this is the entire company for simplicities sake.) The RN makes 60k a year, and the LPN makes 40K a year, the two CNAs make 25-30K a year. The only way to increase their funds would be to take away from the LPN and RN salary. However, since there is a shortage of LPNs and RNs, and there is not a shortage of CNA's, the CNA's will be shafted each and every time. Another contributing factor is that management is always a group of registered nurses, so naturally they are going to look out for their own backs first.
I would recommend continuing your education toward nursing school if you expect to make a decent living.
My 20 year old son makes $8.25 as a cashier at the local grocery store. Sad that he'll probably be making more than me when I finish my CNA course! I'm currently earning $16-20/hour (preschool educator) and am already cringing at the thought of getting paid half my current salary. BUT....I'm using the CNA course as a stepping stone to my RN so I know *one day* I'll be making far more than I make now. Luckily my husband has a very good income so my lack of decent pay for a few years won't matter much in the grand scheme of things. Being a CNA is definitely A LOT of work for VERY little money!
Yes, I too, plan on going farther than a cna....In due time though. My husband, also, makes enough money for both of us. I really don't have to work, however, I can't "not work". I am also a cake decorator. At the grocery store, I was making minimum $ 9.00 an hour. But I've come to the conclusion, to accept it for whatever it is. I guess I was basically venting because I was in shock, when I found out what the pay scale "really" was. Thanks for your reply. My exam date is this Thursday, so Im going to catch up on my Mosby cna skills videos.
I agree w/ you cnahopeful..unfortunately that's reality...I am using this cna cert for experience and to eventually become an RN or possibly a PA...We can only look forward till we reach our goal on becomin a health professional.. Good luck on your exam!..Let us know how was your exam!..Best wishes:lol2:

let's not forget that nurses have much more schooling and responsibility than we do as cnas… the should be making more money than us. although, i do agree that $7/hr is terrible.

I am from Hernando county florida. The pay scale for Cnas is ridiculous. I just found out that 2 of my classmates, who "did" pass the exam, just got jobs. One, got hired at a hospital and the other at an assisted living facility. The hospital, starts out at $ 8.50 and the assisted living facility starts out at $ 7.50. Are you freakin kidding me???? That's horrible. Im better off working at Wal-mart as a greeter...Same pay, but less stress. Minimum wage I think is $7.21. What can we cnas do to get the pay scale increased, here in FL??? Do we need to write gov. Rick Scott??? Well, that won't work, he's out for the rich people. I am disgusted. I guess I am going to have to go back to school and further my career options....at 41..... :smackingf
