  1. Should nurses be allowed to use fantasy hair colors (green, purple, blue, pink) to work?

    • Heck no! It's not formal
    • Meh, if the works well... why bother?
    • Oh Yeah!!!! We have the right to do what we want with our hair!

A friend and ex coworker posted on facebook about how much she has been criticized by her superiors at the hospital for her new hairdo... She decided to get a new hair color: blue... Unconventional color in the conservative nursing system in Panama where nurses wear nice caps, white uniforms, and long white stockings.

Although I truly believe in the right of expression of every human being, nurses have to take care of their image and honor. Hair color has to do nothing with skills, clinical judgement, decision making, and teaching...But credibility.

Any thoughts about hairdos and the use of fantasy hair colors by nurses???? Any thoughts???

No one is talking about the skill level of a nurse. We are talking about whether it is professional to dye your hair blue. How you present yourself is important especially to family members of patients. I am sure there are great nurses who have satan tattooed on their forearm..that does not mean they will not be preceived as unprofessional by others. Do whatever you want, but understand there are sometimes consequences to decisions. I like to make my life easier and presenting myself as a professional makes a difference. Life is hard enough and I will not give management a free shot at me for looking like a goofball. I control what I can control to make my life easier. Do whatever works for you.

Nothing wrong with tattoos, hair colors, piercing, etc or the person who sports them. However, I feel the smart person conforms somewhat to their environment. In a conservative environment, you risk making patients uncomfortable and being overlooked for advancement. I fly my freak flag outside of work even though we are not very strict at this employer. She is probably not going to be a change agent and bring about a new sense of open mindedness all by herself in this community.

I started a similar post a couple of months ago in jest - where I stated that I had always wanted to dye my skin green and my hair bright orange but was told that such fashion modifications were not allowed because they we not natural to human beings. You could go back and look it up. It got hilarious . Most hospital's have some sort of standardized dress and grooming code and you know what that is when you are hired. I did actually dye my hair a bright red (Almost Day-Glo) by accident and didn't have time before I went to work to fix it. My DON gave me a look but didn't say anything. The next day I toned it down to a nice auburn and she said it was a nice color when I walked by her office.

Individuality is one thing but all workplaces have a culture they are trying to communicate to the community and fashion and grooming standards are just part of that.

Hppygr8ful......I loved your earlier post about green skin and orange hair, except that I gave an intelligent, thoughtful, heartfelt, reply, :sarcastic: only to find out you were pulling our legs. At first I thought this was you posting again!

Oh my god yes!!! This times a million!!!! People just don't have any kind of a clue. :roflmao:

Sometimes you have to bend a little bit -- I want to have sleeves and stuff but not while I'm in school (obviously can't afford them at the moment!!) and I am going to dye my hair but WELL after I have the job I want and WELL after I'm established as competent.

Just saw I like colors, I like rainbow hair but just look on :woot: I saw really gorgeous variants in neway look

But now it's going with me !

My mentor has pink stripes in her hair.

I can't image it will be too much of an issue, but might vary trust to trust.
