6th Time a Charm.. Anyone can do this!

Nursing Students NCLEX

I wanted to make sure it was offical before I wrote this post.. On Friday Jan 20th 2012, I tested for the last time. My 6th time. And I passed with 75 questions in less than an hour.. I've posted on here a few times, looking for advice, giving advice, complaining, crying.. And now I couldn't wait to write this post to maybe help others.

Every other time I took this test I never did horrible (either 265 questions or in the 200's) so I knew I was just missing something. I also had a lot of things going on in my life and for whatever reason, I didn't truly commit to studying like I did this time.

1. I changed my attitude and the way I did things. I became so focused even my dad said I was in a different zone. I studied day in and day out, every possible minute I could for about 3 months.

2. I've used Kaplan in the past, obviously didn't work for me. I truly believe you can pass this test by using different resources and not spending $500 on a review class. I used

--Saunders 5th Edition - read the whole book and did as many questions as I could on the CD.

--Exam Cram - read the whole book and did all the practice tests along with looked up online older versions and did those tests.

-- Lippincott Q&A - did a few practice tests but I didn't really like this book and it didn't help me that much.

-- The LaCharity book - awesome book. Helped so much when taking the Nclex. Did all the questions on the CD though that it came with.

-- Made flash cards of things I didn't know including lab values and meds.

-- Saunders Strategies - didn't really help, more of a book for people who have never seen the Nclex before.

-- NCLEX 4000 ... the BEST source I think. I felt like the nclex was most like this and I flew through the questions on Nclex because I felt like I was just doing another practice test.

-- Allnurses.. You guys are awesome! I've went through the Random Fact throwing thread and also have been sent many other great reveiw threads. Thank you so much to everyone who has posted, responded to me, and just gave words of encouragement. This is truly a wonderful thread!

3. I prayed ALOT. I'm not a very religious person but I started to believe and have faith in myself that I was capable of passing this test and I walked in that room ready to pass. I draw RN after my name on pieces of paper and left them around my room. The day of the test on the white board all I wrote was "I can do this". I NEVER said that any other time that I tested. I knew in my heart this was the time for me.

The key is to do THOUSANDS of practice questions. I would say I at least did 5,000 questions (with repeats in the mix). I had a ton of SATA and I was HAPPY to see them because I knew I was doing good. I prayed to get 75 questions and I did. I felt so confident when I left that room.

This test really isn't out there to trick you, it is actually pretty straight forward and if you prepare like I did this time then theres no way you can fail. And if you do, try try again. Never give up!!

I also didn't make it the first time (I took and failed the 1st time last Dec 17, 2010). And I'm preparing to take my 2nd try on March 9th. I did "overhaul" my review style and schedule entirely this time. :) I'm also hoping to get the same results after taking it this time.

I did pass my local boards on the 1st try with little preparation so I know I can do this! (I'm a Filipino Nurse) Good luck to everyone testing. We can do this!! :D Just give it your very best.

And to you, a very big CONGRATULATIONS! Yours was indeed a very inspiring story, to never say die and finally conquering NCLEX! Good luck on your future career. And thank you for sharing this to everyone. =)

Congrats! But I gotta say, that $500 Kaplan course is a major reason why I passed my first time with only 80 questions- it totally reframed my idea of test-taking and strategy over content. Highly recommended!

I definitely did think it was a helpful course packed with tons of information. I think you definitely get your moneys worth. Everyone's different, it just didn't help me as much :)

Thank you so much everyone :)

Congratulations RN !!!!! :)

I'm so happy for you :)...failed boards twice now, spent over 1000 dollars between retaking fees and hurst review. I thought getting to nursing school was tough until I met the devil "nclex". I too have bought different resources to study from and practice at least 200 qs a day. I too hope to post on here whenever I test for my third time. Anybody retesting in Feb feel free to share comments or tips on helping me how to study. I just hope I can do this...to be able to move on!!!!!

And as for you DRAGONFLY. Don't lose hope! Try to assess first your study strategies/techniques/schedule. Eliminate whatever/whoever you think is distracting you or not helping you to retain learning. Plus, you come up with a great test-taking strategy review. You cannot learn everything for NCLEX exam. But if you apply superb test-taking strategies, you can do pass it! So, goodluck to us! :D

Thanks :) as of matter of fact I did get rid of people and stuff that was distracting my focus. I moved on from a 4.5 year relationship and I don't have a cellphone anymore jaja MY LIFE is studying for the NCLEX NOW, this is my full time job :D and I'm glad....first it was hard for me to be in school bc of financial reasons and now that i finish school I can't let this beat me down...concetrating has gotten harder but I think I'm making progress....doing qs N A is hard work. umm quick qs what does SATA mean? I see it in a lot of comments regarding what kind of qs they had on NCLEX.

Thanks for your comment :) wish u best as well.

sata = select all that apply :D

Thanks :) ohh dang, i had close to 30 of those on my last attempt ....not sure if i like them that much....they are hard...and i ran out of time at 200. hummmm better practice those then...

Wow. Congrats! Thanks for posting and inspiring me today. Going on my 5th time and still refuse to give up. Way to go :yeah:

sata were always my worst enemy! i used what a lot of people do.. going through each answer choice and asking if it's true or false to the question. i definitely got better at doing them with just practice and of course knowing the content being asked. i knew i was doing good on my nclex this time around because i got a ton of sata and i was happy to see them! it's a good thing to get them because they are passing level questions!

gefresno07 - you can do this! i've come to the conclusion that it just wasn't my time to pass during my previous attempts. i had a lot going on in my life and it took the 6th time to truly change my study habits and to actually say "i'm ready to pass this". good luck, i know you can do it!

Getting a lots of these type of questions in nclex means you are really passing. Remember, as you answer more questions correctly, the harder questions you get. I must say they're hard since if you don't get the exact correct items, you are already wrong for that question. So,more practice in answering them. And treat them like a true/false. Take time also in answering, you don't want to lose the chance of getting it right just by hurrying to finish the test - my worst mistake when I first took it last 2010. :(Never mind. So moving on, we can make it! When are you testing? I will retake mine on march 9. :)
