Texas Tech 2nd degree BSN program 2015

Published

Hey I was looking for a new thread on the people applying for the Texas Tech 2015 accelerated 2nd degree BSN program, specifically Austin, and couldn't find one so I thought I would start one. All the previous threads have been really helpful. Is there anyone applying for the Austin location?? Anyone already have their CNA or planning on getting it soon??

@ Flyonn...just curious where did you get a 2% rate??

Cochanel, thanks for the kind words for everyone and really sorry they didn't accept you this year! I bet a year of CNA work and you'd be a shoo-in next year.

OMG I just got accepted to Dallas! This wait was BRUTAL! lol

Congrats SicEm, thats great news! We should try to get our two classes together at some point and we can give you all (can't say yall, I'm from the northeast) the lowdown on what to expect.

Priddy, SallieMae offered me 2.25% with a .25% reduction for paying via autodebit...my credit score is around 820 and its an adjustable rate, but since I plan on paying it off within 2 years, I don't think rates will rise that much.

Thanks! Yes we should get together! I'll definitely take all the advice I can get! Lol

We should start a Dallas facebook group as well!!!

Hi SicEm! I would love if you could keep in touch with me maybe email or something to let me know how you like it? I couldn't apply this round, but will the next one for Dallas. Also, how was the TEAS? I need to take that, but have everything else done. :) My email is leigh6870 at yahoo dot com

Hi Flyonn! I'm thinking about doing the Texas Tech program here in Dallas. I'm currently an ultrasound tech (for 2 years), but LOVE nursing and interacting with the patients. Would you mind emailing me so I don't clog up this forum with probably the million questions I have? :) leigh6870 at yahoo dot com

Hi everyone. I'm currently in the Dallas cohort and used allnurses quite a bit during my application process so I figured I'd try to give back a little. I haven't read through all the posts, but from what I did read, Kasey seems to be doing a great job answering your questions.

Just a bit about what my application looked like since I'm sure many of you are interested in that.

-3.2 overall GPA, 3.6ish in sciences.

-94ish on TEAS V

-No clinical experience other than what I had earning my CNA certificate.

- 9 years experience in multi-unit restaurant management (nearly all the faculty I've spoken with love people with restaurant experience because it's in the service industry)

-3 of my prereqs hadn't been completed by application due date (patho, texas history, nutrition)

The Dallas cohort is new this year. We only have 10 students right now but next year they are increasing it to 15. Within the next few years their goal is to have 40 students. The clinicals are all done at Dallas Presbyterian and done on either a med-surg floor or an ortho floor (other than our specialty rotations like OB, mental health, etc). From what I've gathered from being in the program, Austin seems to offer a more diverse set of choices for where to complete your rotations (ICU, step down units, cardio, etc) which is pretty cool. The neat thing about Dallas is that we don't have to do any night rotations. All of ours are day shifts (7a-7p) which, if you're like me and have kids, I think is a huge benefit.

That's it for now. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best at responding.

Did anyone in the Dallas cohort your year receive any scholarships? I'm trying to figure out if second degree students have the same chance of getting scholarships as the traditional students. I have a friend who was a traditional student in Odessa and had a scholarship that was merit based.

Hi! The TEAS was tougher than the HESI. I got a 92 on the HESI but an 81 on the TEAS. I would recommend getting a study guide to prepare. I used a study guide that was supposed to prepare me for both tests, but it really only prepared me for the HESI. Hope that helps!

@lele8907- Sorry for the delay. Fall semester is busy with job applications and what not. Honestly, I don't think I'm the best person to ask about paying for the program as I received total support from my parents (I'm 23 and fresh out of undergrad!).

Most of my classmates took out loans, however. You can apply for financial aid through FAFSA as you would any other program. There are also scholarship opportunities through TTUHSC that you can apply for as well.

I rented (most) of my textbooks through Chegg.com which averaged about $200 per semester. There were some textbooks I bought because you need them for the duration of the program. I bought three scrub tops (about $75-80 including sewing on your patches), but didn't buy scrub bottoms because I had some from my work as a PCT. You have to buy a decent stethoscope ($50-80), a pen light ($5-20), scissors ($5-20), and a cheap-o watch ($15). I bought that trendy clipboard with the nursing information on the back ($35) and would not recommend it at all. Total waste of money. There are some software programs ($200) you have to buy throughout the semester too. You will also have to buy parking ($10 per month) to get access to the CEC/Brackenridge Hospital for simulation days/testing. At the end of the year, you will have to pay for your NCLEX application/registration ($325). If you choose to take an NCLEX prep course ($300), you'll have to fork out for that too. You may also have to purchase a business professional/casual clothing, a portfolio, resume paper, etc. ($100+) for job interviews and networking, if you don't have it already.

I think that's the majority of it. This obviously does not include your tuition. In case you haven't noticed, this program is very expensive. :)
