Texas Tech 2nd degree BSN program 2015

Published

Hey I was looking for a new thread on the people applying for the Texas Tech 2015 accelerated 2nd degree BSN program, specifically Austin, and couldn't find one so I thought I would start one. All the previous threads have been really helpful. Is there anyone applying for the Austin location?? Anyone already have their CNA or planning on getting it soon??

Accepted into Amarillo!!! :)

Congrats to everyone else!

Yay! I got in to Amarillo! No idea where I'm going to live though.

Hey Cinders,

I think Kaseyroo address this in an earlier post, probably within the first 10 pgs of the threat, but I'll give it a shot. Clearly this will apply to Dallas and may be slightly different for Austin, but should be close.

While I'm thinking of it, one difference between Dallas and Austin is that Dallas only requires morning shifts (7a-7p) while Austin students may have to do night shifts.

So to start, yes, the first three weeks you will be doing "Bootcamp" a two credit class where you will spend 5 days a week in a simulation lab learning the basics of nursing like IV's, foleys, suctioning, wound care, etc.

Once bootcamp is over, it's difficult to say exactly how many days a week you will be away from home. It really depends on whats going on that week. For example, this week and next I will only be gone one day each week because of scheduling issues with my wife. However, the following week I will be away 5 days due to clinical, tests, sim lab, etc. If I had to pick an average, it's probably 2-3 days a week.

Specialty rotations require 45 hours of clinical rotations. It usually amounts to 3, 13 hr shifts and then some hours thrown in for orientation to the unit, sim lab, etc. They usually give you a week to complete these hours, sometimes 10 days.

In a nutshell, you are required to do 225 hours of clinicals on your "normal" floor each semester and then whatever specialty clinics you have that semester. Due to the fact that summer semester is much shorter than fall or spring, you have to pack the same amount of hours into a shorter semester and thus will be away from home more each week.

Sorry if this post is a jumbled mess, its hard with two sick kids running around.

Good luck

I may take you up on that and buy your books!

hey @flyonn & @kaseyroo, Just a personal question.. Where did most of your money come from to support yourself && pay tuition? Did u take out loans at all? Is each semester paid in plans? What was your cost of books, scrubs, supplies, etc? Just an estimate figure. I am trying to get an idea of how to plan for next year so any financial information is helpful! Thanks :)

On my application, Dallas was my first choice, Lubbock was my alternate. I interviewed in Lubbock and she asked me the same question, which I found odd. But my denial email doesn't specify, it just basically says "ummm No"! Lol God has a plan for us all, it is just not my season :sneaky:

Cochanel, I also applied to Dallas and was denied. I still have 4 pre-reques to complete and think this was my downfall. Were you in progress with any still?

Lele,

I (and I think all my classmates) took out loans for school. I think the total program cost is about 23,000 give or take. I personally took out about 40k in loans, but that's cause I used a bunch of loan money for house stuff (can't get a 2% loan anywhere else). I can't tell you for sure how much we spent in books but I'd guess in the 200-300 per semester range. I only bought two scrub tops and bottoms, but I know people bought more. The program also "requires" you to buy a white coat, but honestly, we have worn it ZERO times, so if I were you, I wouldn't buy one.

Hmm, in terms of supplies you will need a stethoscope (my wife is a PA so I already had one) and I think those can range from 75-200. Plenty of people had the cheap ones. Other than that maybe a penlight and books, pens, etc. Oh, you will need to buy a medication app for your phone which costs around $125, but to be honest, if you can figure out a way around having to get it, then I'd do that because we almost never use it.

Heyy I haven't been on here in a little while either but I also got a denial letter late Friday evening. I was quite surprised too but also feel God has a plan for me and did not want me doing this. I am going through with a 2 year at either Texas Tech or Texas State Round Rock. Good luck to everyone that is in the program and congratulations!!

I only had Life Span Human development course that I registered for this fall, I also signed up for CNA training starting oct 28 (I faxed in all info to the dept). I've been a pharmacy tech for 6 yrs, my degree is in Nutrition/ minor in Chemistry. So trust me, I was SHOcKed to see a denial letter!

Am I the only one on here that hasn't received a rejection or acceptance letter yet? lol

I got my rejection letter late Friday as well. I was really counting on Tech but i also applied to A&M. Still waiting on them, but it's a real long shot. So I will probably apply to Texas State as well. I'm also looking at UT's alternate entry masters program. Congratulations to everyone!!
