Texas Tech 2nd degree BSN program 2015

Published

Hey I was looking for a new thread on the people applying for the Texas Tech 2015 accelerated 2nd degree BSN program, specifically Austin, and couldn't find one so I thought I would start one. All the previous threads have been really helpful. Is there anyone applying for the Austin location?? Anyone already have their CNA or planning on getting it soon??

I'll be applying for Austin too! I'm finishing up prereqs at ACC. I'm planning on getting my CNA this summer through Health Care Career Centers in Round Rock. I know someone who went through their program and liked it. I also need to take the TEAS V test. I've read through the other threads too and found some great info. I'm most worried about not having any kind of medical experience. My grades will be fine, and I'm not too worried about the TEAS V test, but I have zero medical experience. I'm going to try to get some volunteer hours in next fall, but that's still up in the air!

Hey I am sorry I just saw this! I thought I had a notification on so I know when people comment on the thread. Guess not. I graduate from Tech in the Spring but I am currently at ACC too! I am trying to improve my microbiology grade. I am currently in a CNA course at ACC. It's going very well I would recommend it. We finish in about 5 weeks. I justtt took the TEAS V two days ago. It wasn't bad at all and I already got my score. Overall I got a 76% which is good enough but I think I might take it again to try and get advanced level. I didn't study at all since I have so much going on right now.

I wouldn't be too worried about medical experience as long as everything else is good. I don't have too much just some volunteer hours in Lubbock hospitals. I am also hoping for some experience this Fall. Maybe as a CNA.

I am really excited though. I keep reading through the threads and it all sounds good. I don't personally know anyone who has been through the program but I have heard of some through friends. Everything I hear is good!

Hello! This will be my 3rd time applying to the program. I was accepted to the TCU Accelerated Program which starts next month but it is so expensive. I decided to withdrawal my application. I had an interview at the Abilene location the first time but I wasn't as prepared as I thought. The second time I applied to the Austin location but did not get invited for an interview. This time I will be applying to the Dallas, Austin, and Abilene locations. I will definalty be retaking my TEAS exam....I hate that test..Lol!

aqua2303: What made you think you were not prepared enough? I am nervous I won't get in. Seems like they're looking for people with a lot of experience in the healthcare field and I do not have much. I hate that test too! I did alright but I would like to do better!!

I will be applying to the Texas Tech 2nd degree program in Lubbock. I'm so nervous about getting in and honestly not feeling that confident. I've been working full time in the finance field since graduating in 2012 but have 0 medical expierence. I think my core gpa is like 3.4 and my science gap will be 3.6 hopefully. I don't think that will be good enough and I also haven't taken the TEAS yet, so also stressing about that.

Hey guys! I am currently in the 2014 cohort here in Austin, TX and I remember how grueling the admission process was. We get about two weeks off between the spring and summer semester, so I would be happy to answer some of your questions while I have a little bit of time off. Best of luck to everyone!

Hi Kasey,

Do you mind letting us know what your grades and experience as well as your TEAS score when you applied

Was Austin your first choice?

Sure. I had a BS ('12) from UT with an overall of a 3.5ish and a pre-requisite of a 3.7ish. I got an 80% on my TEAS. I had about two years of experience as a PCT (CNA/phlebotomy certified) on a busy/crazy medical-surgical floor in Round Rock and a few months on a telemtry/IMC floor in central Austin. I had volunteer experience as a tutor/mentor at an elementary school in East Austin and in a nursery at my church. In my early college years, I had an internship at Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX in their occupational health clinic. I also did a lot of organizational stuff in college with our campus health liaison group, which included a trip to a college health conference in Chicago for a presentation. Finally, I had some research experience at UT within the Department of Psychology doing alcohol/risky behavior research. As you can tell, I liked public health stuff.

I felt like I had a really diverse background, which I was banking on. Despite all this, they really only cared about my clinical experience. So, I will say that clinical experience is absolutely key for this program and that is what got me in (besides my grades/scores).

Austin was my first choice. I applied to one other program (UTMB) and was offered an interview. I declined the interview after being accepted to TTU. I intended to apply to UT-Houston, but ended up not because I was accepted to TTU by that time.

Hope that helps!

Hi Kasey, wow you have an impressive background. I just recently considered ttu as I didn't know they had a web based program. Right now I plan on finishing my cna courses in June and begin working after I become certified. I'm very interested in this program. I called ttu because I'm in San Antonio and I just thought about this but do you know what campus I would apply to? posters above mentioned applying to different locations...I thought since it's one university the location doesn't matter, but it seems like it does? Could you shed some light? Thanks

@hopefulprayers1- Thank you! Appreciate it. There are a few different campuses; Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Dallas, Lubbock, and Odessa. Make sure you look into the application process for the second-degree programs through the HSC. It is not the same as TTU in Lubbock. As for being located in SA, it will be a challenge if you are not willing to relocate. You will have to commute to central Austin from 1-3 times per week for proctored exams, post-clinical conferences, simulation lab days, etc. We had a classmate (no longer in the program) who lived in SA and his clinicals were in Kerrville, but he had to make the commute to Austin a few times a week. Hope that helps!

Thanks Kasey, I called ttu and they told me that they now have preceptors in SA and I should be fine. I guess I'll have to ask about the post-clinical conferences etc. I believe I've looked into the HSC requirements but I'm a bit confused as I've seen different deadlines on the ttu website. One on page it says the deadline is in July and on another it says it is Sept 1, do you happen to know the deadline?
