Texas OR internship for new grads???????

Good luck. I searched for any hospital anywhere in the U.S. that would train me to work in the OR. And I graduated in 1986. They all wanted someone with at least one year training in OR. How does one get the training to be an experienced OR nurse without being given a chance?

But I was also looking for relocation allowance and a hire on bonus, so perhaps that was asking too much :rolleyes:

Does anyone know any hospitals in Texas that will hire new grad as OR nurse?
I am interested in working in OR but I don't want to work 1 or 2 years in Med/surg or other floor. I want to know if there are any hospitals in Texas that will provide internship? And what is the year of commitment do they need?

Opportunities for the new grad in the OR exist here in Missouri, although of course that is not Texas! But where there's one new grad OR program, there's likely to be another. Good luck!

I worked at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas in the OR as the Department Secretary from 1992-1997, new grads were hired right out of school at that time. I don't know if they still do though.

There are quite a few hospitals in North Texas that hire new grads as OR nurses. I know because I interviewed at most of them when I was looking for an internships 3 yrs ago. I had the opportunity to pick and choose.

In Dallas the OR nurse internships run anywhere from 4-9 mos long, are a combination of classroom and clinical rotations where you both scrub and circulate. After the internship you're on a fulltime contract that lasts anywhere from 12-24 mos. I don't where you're from but if you have access to a Dallas newspaper, every Sunday they have the health career section. Also, be sure to check out the advertisements in some nursing magazines like Nurseweek Southwest edition.

Off the top of my head I know that all the teaching hospitals in Dallas have OR nurse internships, I don't know about any of the hospitals in Plano.

Firstly, I had the chance to pick and choose my job because I had gotten married like 4 mos before I wrote the NCLEX and got my license and then waited for endorsement, plus my husband being the sweetheart he is didn't want me to just accept my first successful job interview. He wanted me to do my homework and find a place where I'd be happy in.

My current job is the only O.R job I've ever had so any info I have on other hospitals is pure hearsay. Do a Google search for hospitals in Dallas, that's a good start. I don't know if the Baylor hospitals are teaching hospitals but I do know that a brand new Baylor hospital is opening in Plano next month.

If I were you, I would write a list of things I'm looking for in an internship, i.e, length of internship and contract afterwards, do they teach how to circulate AND scrub, financial benefits that come with working there(reimburesements, bonuses), length of your commute to that hospital, etc... and use that list to make your decision.

Most of the larger hospitals in the Dallas areas should offer some type of OR internship program .... you may have to wait until an opening comes up.. try Baylor and Parkland...these internships usually are about a year...my suggestion is to call as many in the Dallas area as possible... perisistence pays off... and you will never be sorry...... I've been in the OR for 15 years now.. and love it.. good luck from the Texas Coast

I have just talked to a recruiter for OR at Baylor. She said she would love me to go to their upcoming job fair. She said she does hire new grads for OR internship. BUT all internship has to work full time and also commit for 2 years after a year of training as full time.

I am not sure if I want to work full time after the internship. I want to work 64 hours max per pay period. I am wondering if other hospitals have internship that I don't have to commit for full time employment after training?

Yeah, I talked to someone at Baylor and she said she hires new grads for internships. But I have to work as full time during internship and 2 years after internship. I am not sure if I want to work full time for 3 years (since their internship is about a year). I have two young kids and I will need to spend more time with them. Do you by any chance know of any hospital that will let me work part time after internship? Thanks!

Think about Baylor again... did she tell you that the hospital has a week day crew and a weekend crew? I worked at Baylor WAY back there in the early 80's... actually I worked Mon/Tue/Wed 12 hour shifts.. had the rest of the days off.. loved it and Baylor is an excellant hospital ... very large. However, at that time I was not in the OR.... it was post=op. I have a traveler in my OR now from Baylor... she's a weekend OR manager there. She comes down here to the coast and works for me Tues,Wed,THur, FRid and goes home to work her weekend OR manager shift ( kid at Harvard).. I could ask her any questions you might have...I will ask her about the hours required to be considered full time...I'm curious...... anyway.. Baylor is great... Dallas is great.... I left to get married and have been down on the coast since... I still miss it....
