Test Format

Published

Hi All,

I'm just starting nursing school this August. I am curious how the NCLEX is formatted. How many questions is it? Is there a certain score that is good or passing?

I'd appreicate any info :)

Also - when do you recommend I start studying...my program is 2 years long.

Thanks!

As of right now, the NCLEX is 75-265 questions.

Get a good NCLEX question book and use it to study with, along with your school stuff. The more questions you answer during school, the better off you'll be for your school tests.

Then, answer at least 3000-5000 questions after you graduate to study for your NLCEX.

I used two Saunder's CD's. I think I answered all questions on both CDs (before then HESI, and after graduating to study for the NLCEX).

Good luck to you!

So does the test stops if you get to a passing or failing point?

The test stops once it has decided you have meet 50% and is more than the min amount of questions asked. You can find everything about the test here https://www.ncsbn.org/about.htm

Once the computer determines that you have, within 95%, either met the standard, or are under the standard, it will stop.

So, you could pass or fail at 75, or pass or fail at 265.

It will keep giving you questions until it can be certain. (If you get an easy one right, it will go to moderate. If you get that one, it will get harder, etc.....until it determines a 95% above or below the standard.)

You may be able to find out more on https://www.ncsbn.org.
