Hi guys! Just joined allnurses tonight :) I'm an RN from Illinois, 2 weeks ago I sent all requirements to California BRN for a California permanent license request. I was planning to move to CA in August so I didn't request a temporary license when I sent my request, figured I have enough time before the move, (bad idea!). Now, I found out I can move earlier to CA than originally planned so I'm wondering if I request a temporary license now if I have to go through the same steps again that I did for the permanent license or is there a way I can make the request without having to go to Sacramento and filling up the same forms. Thanks for the help.

i was in that boat last year, they literally take forever to give you a license there. they told me i could not request a temp license after the fact. i would call and check with the board though. have plenty of spare time, as they take about 10 minutes to answer your call.

I moved from WA to CA and it took me 3-4 months to get my RN license. Long waiting time when calling too. Make sure its worth getting the temporary license, especially if you have to wait the same amount of time. And also don't wait too long because pretty soon community colleges and universities are sending their graduating RN's licensing info too which backs up the whole process. Good luck!!

I thought CA was a walk thru state......I know it is quite timely to go to Sacramento and all but why would you wait 3-4 months? I must be missing something?????

Yea, they don't do the walk-thru any more. Had a few people that had bad background checks come back after they were already licensed and working. (Oooops!)
Kinda sucks though. I got mine in 2 1/2 hours after driving to Sacramento on a Friday.
Was in line with 5 other people @ 0900. Submitted my paperwork.
They sent us to lunch and told to come back @ 1100.
I was out the door by 1130. I drove to Reno for some Texas Holdem' all weekend.
Started my job that Monday back in San Jose'.
That's a shame! I believe there should be a National license, and then whatever state you work in could charge a fee for that year alone..Of course there should not even be a fee but we know that is not going to happen!
thank you guys for the replies. :) i got in touch with the California Board of Nursing and I was instructed to reprint the page with the box that requests temporary license and mail it to them with the $50 check. They say as soon as FBI clears my fingerprint card, they will issue my temporary license as early as next week.

Yes, they still do walk through but your live scan most be completed 10 days prior to going to Sacramento. I just went through the process. Of course I had to make two trips to Cali and I hated that, but the process was about two weeks instead of the same day. As long as you get the live scan 10 to 14 days before heading to Sacramento, she can get a temp license.
It's an old post but thanks for the updated information.
Sure, you're welcome.

I am wondering because I applied for a temporary license from ca two weeks ago... How did you know you got it?? Did they send it in the mail or did it show up on the homepage under verification of temporary license?? Thanks!

Hello, I just joined all nurses. I was wondering, what did you receive that tells you the Calif temporary license has been issued?
