hey everyone!

i was just wondering, are nights on a tele floor easier than days?

which shift would you prefer to work if you were new?

That is really a matter of opinion and what you consider to be "easier".

I have worked nights my entire nursing career and I like it for the fact that there are less human beings around, including administration types.

But working nights brings its own stressors and it really is a different life style. Sometimes all I want is to sleep and sleep becomes absolutely the most important thing in my life. Usually, you have more patients at night, which can make up for the fact that there are often less demands coming from the patients.

I really believe that each shift has its challenges. Which challenges are you more ready to face?

When I was your age I definately prefered nights. I never had to worry about missing anything during the day or on weekends. I might have gone to wherever very sleepy but never missed a thing.

At 51, sleep is far more important to me. Good Luck!

I work tele on evenings 3-11. Didn't like days too much. Nothing to do with being 'easier'. Each shift has its advantages/disadvantages.

I worked night shift for years and recently changed to evenings. I liked working nights because I learned more about working independently than other shifts. We were on our own as far as starting IVs and things like that. I had more time to look over the chart and note orders. If we had some downtime, I also had the opportunity to learn things from more experienced nurses. Also, since nights have less people, we'd have to depend on one another to help out, so you'd get to actually help out with things you're unfamiliar with.

But I like where I am now because it suits my marriage a lot better. Also, I had more of a chance to shop around and I like where I am because staffing on this shift is better than either days or nights.

I started on tele at nights and found it was good in that you usually had some down time where you could review charts, strips, and try to understand things better. I recently went back to days and the pace is soooo much faster. I'm doing a swing shift now where I get all admissions, usually post-cath, EPS, OSH admissions, which is good in terms of getting my "quick skills" up to par. You deal with patients coming and going on the days more, which can be a juggling act.
