I really need to know what type of hours you had class and clinicals for the RN program at TCC if you attended their program. It really makes or breaks it for me as I have no one to watch my children after 6pm. Do they work with me on hours for clinicals? It's the difference between me going or not. THANKS!
I'm in principles of chem this semester and there's a lot of girls in there who are nursing majors and they aren't taking chem 1. Princ of chem doesn't require college algebra,
If this is the way you want to go, jump in on the prereqs. You could start on the stuff that could be taken online/telecourse.
Marilyn, does your cousin work in Oklahoma??? I would seriously consider doing my LPN in Sapulpa if I thought it was worth my time. I just thought there weren't many jobs for LPNs.
Lana,
Thanks so much for the advice. I DO want to jump right in and start, but this has to be a mutual decision for both me and my family and unfortunitely 4 years of college does not fit into the plan I admire you so much for having the means and determination.

While it seems like they are being phased out to some extent, I'm still seeing some job openings for LPNs being posted, but from what I've heard form working nurses, even if a job is posted for an RN, they will often hire an LPN, especially at the hospital where you do your externship.
As for the means and determination...it took me 10 years of taking college classes off and on to finally figure out what I want to do with my life! Once I figured it out, I decided I didn't have any time to waste! I hope you can figure out a way to make it work for you!

I just thought there weren't many jobs for LPNs.Yes she has lived in OK all her life and works at the VA here in OKC at the OUHSC/OU Med Center. She makes pretty good money as well since she only works weekends she gets that bonus money. She is currently taking her RN pre-reqs slowely at OKCCC along the way.
That is about all I know about LPN's though, I really have no idea if LPNs are being phased out, but she and her husband (they both got their LPNs together and both work at the VA) didn't have any problem getting a job.
Good luck!! I think it's smart to really research your options with all this, that is only way to make the best and smartest decision. I did a LOT of research before I wentback to school for my BSN.
I'm not at TCC but I thought I would share what I know about my school because I bet they are all kinda similiar. At my school we have day and evening clinicals: 7am-3pm or 3pm-11pm, usually 2 days a week. I would call your school and ask to speak to whoever is in charge of schedualing clinicals because they may be able to work with you. I know they said we could, if needed, request days or evenings, but I dont think there is any guartunee's with it.
As far as child care help you can take out a student loan to help pay for it. You do *not* have to pay for any students loans until after you graduate! I've been taking out student loans for a couple years now so I know that is a fact.
Good luck!
Marilyn, Where do you attend school that has evening clinicals? I am interested in getting an LPN or RN but not during the day. My eventual goal is BSN then NP.

I'm at University of Central Oklahoma. I'ts not all evening clinicals. Most of them are during the day but they do have some evening (3-11) clinicals for certain classes--I prefer evenings as well. I know when I start community health, etc they do not have any evening clinicals, it's all days. ALL the classes are during the day.
I really don't know of any RN programs that have all evening clinicals....I sure wish they did though!! It would be a lot easier for a lot of people.
Renee73,
Where in OK are you? I went to LPN school in Stillwater at Meridian Technology Center and we had day and evening clinicals. You got to pick which would work best for you and your situation. Our program was also self paced so you could be in the classroom when it was best for you. We had to sign monthly contracts with a minimum of 20 hours per week and as long as you met your contract there were no problems. The classroom was open from 8 am to 9 pm M - Th and 8 am - 5 pm on F. I am currently working in a a doctor's office and I love it. I work for OU in Tulsa and I know they are always hiring at one of their clinics in town and the nice thing about OU is that it is a state job so we have good benefits and no weekends and lots of holidays off.
PM me if you want more information.

LOL That is why I went the BSN route because it really isn't that much longer.
Hmmm my cousin graduated from LPN school and had NO problem finding a job making pretty good money and she only works on the weekends so she gets even more money and more time with her kids. But I honestly don't know much about LPNs, just wanted to share about the one I do know...lol
Don't be so scared of math!! You CAN do this. As a nurse you HAVE to be profecient in math (ok not algebra) but dosage calculations and you have to have a basic idea of chemisty IMO. I started with pre algebra and worked up to college algebra and then statistics and by that time it was easy for me and I made A's in both classes, nothing special about me, you can do the same.
