Hi,
Anyone can give me an idea as how much tax is being deducted from the actual gross of the salary per month.
I just want to compare with my monthly income as a registered nurse here in UK.
Trying to find out if it is worth to move to Canada.

I actually just did tha math the other day with my most recent pay stub. The total of all deductions from my cheque came to 29%. That includes Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance, income tax, health care insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, local area pension and parking. Where you would fall on the pay scale depends on your total hours worked since initial licensure. You have to have documentation to support it, and one year of full time hours here is about 2000. They would take your total hours worked, divide that number by UNA annual full time hours and then place you at that rung on the ladder. If you've worked more than 9 years at full time hours you'd be at the top of the ladder.
That said, there are other things besides taxes that will impact on your quality of life here. The cost of living is quite high, with rents on even small apartments reaching upwards of $1200 a month. Our utilities have been deregulated but there is no competition so prices seek their own level... high. Fuel prices continue to rise causing the cost of everything else to rise. So you need to consider the big picture before deciding the grass here is greener.
hello guys,
Thank you for your reply and info, very much appreciated.
Actually here in UK, I almost get 30% deduction from my monthly salary that includes Employment insurance (PAYE), National Insurance (covers Medical + state pension), Hospital (NHS) Pension.
At present, my rate (senior staff- full time) is almost equivalent to $28/hr.
The cost of living here is i think much higher than in canada. House prices here is also soaring and the petrol now is almost a pound (£.96) per liter.
I have a contingent offer in one of the hospitals in Edmonton. I will be started as a Grad nurse and they will consider my yrs of experience. I am planning to move late next year. so hopefully i wont regret with my decision.

If you do a search for 'marginal tax rate in Canada' you will get several different sites that will calculate this for you.
Cheers!
Have you been booked for your SEC yet? That will be the next hurdle for you, then the dreaded CRNE. Our unit has a nurse from the UK who came on a temporary permit and who is now working toward citizenship. She might have some insights for you. Let me know...
hi,
I want to know about this SEC assessment. I have sent off my application to CARNA.
I am a bachelor degree of nursing graduate with continuous 15 years of nursing experience. Do i still need to undergo SEC?
CARNA will tell you if they want it or not. They look at both education and experience. If you've got well-rounded experience over the last 15 years, then you probably won't need one. The ones that are having the biggest problems are the ones who have graduated recently (in the last few years) whose educational preparation may not match with the educational preparation obtained here in Canada. The SEC is for everyone's protection and while it can be onerous, it's important that we don't ignore it.

I used to work and live in Alberta and now work and live in California. When I was there the starting wage for a RN under UNA was $27. Is it $30 now?? Also if I decide to go back home to Alberta will I be allowed to renew my license or will I have to re-write the exam again?? My AB license has expired:P
Thank you for your info. I also asked my agency here in UK and checked about SEC from the internet. Hopefully I wont need to undergo with that because it seems too many hazzle.
Janfrn, you mentioned that you have a co-worker from UK. How did she or he find working in Alberta. Are you In Calgary or Edmonton?
Has anyone got the results yet from the Oct CRNE? How would you get a Pass mark. Do you need to get 75% correct answers out of 300 question.
The starting rate for brand new nurses is $29.33 an hour. As I explained above, people with experience will be placed on the scale based on the number of hours they've worked as a nurse that they can document. So if you've worked full time for five years, you'd go on the sixth rung or $34.97 an hour. Plus shift differentials.
Because you've already held an Alberta license, you would apply for reinstatement. The information on that is here: http://www.nurses.ab.ca/Carna/index.aspx?WebStructureID=949 All the forms are available on line. It's much easier than if you had never been registered here! You would NOT have to rewrite that beastly exam.
Thank you for the info. The wages in AB is almost same as the wages here in California. Thats really good:)
