After 20 years out of state will be moving back to Florida, but not to an area we are that familiar with. So all you Tampa people; what are people from Tampa called? - want to be very careful here - whats the good and whats the don't-even-think-about-it in hospital and LTC options?
And what about areas of towns - which are in decline, and which are more desirable?
Thanks for any replies. And greetings from West By-God.

are you looking at a particular area? I live on the other side of the bay, in Clearwater. I really like my area, close to the beaches, Tampa and St. Petersburg. I'm not too familiar with areas in Tampa. I've worked at Morton Plant in Clearwater and St Joe's in Tampa, and, by far, Morton Plant is the better hospital. It's cleaner, the physicians are (generally) better, and while it's in a mixed community (poor area close to rich area), the patients are generally cleaner.

I've lived in Clearwater since 94. Its funny, many people who live on this side of the bay try not to cross to Tampa side. I bet I've not been across the bay since Xmas.
I did clinicals at Morton Plant as mentioned above and really like that hospital. I never had a problem with any of the staff, they were all more than willing to help a student (including the doctors).
Pinellas county is very nice with it having lots of beach area as well as lots of parks and trails.
I don't know a whole lot about Tampa and surrounding area.
Move to Pinellas....you won't regret it.

I lived in Tampa and it is a very nice place to be but the salary for nurses is very cheap. The cost of living is not too high and the homes are pretty cheap to rent. It is a good place for children too.
Will surely look at Clearwater, Oldsmar, etc. I have nothing against clean, quiet, small hospitals. Have done the mega Level 1 teaching hospitals before, from L.A. to D.C. Getting beat up every night all night needn't be a lifelong career path.
On the other hand they always need new warm bodies. Wonder why?
How are the biggest ones there? Anything different than everywhere else?

Tampa is a great area. There are alot of jobs here also. We have many hospitals and other great nurse job options like United Health Care. Good Luck
Bayfront Medical Center in St Petersburg and Tampa General Hospital are the level 1 trauma hospitals. I've not worked in either so can't advise you on that.
There are lots of hospitals in Tampa Bay.

I live in Seminole, which is on the Pinellas side of the bridge. I am just off of Indian Rocks Beach...I have lived here my entire 31 years minus a short 9mo stint in Tennessee. I can say that it is a beautiful area with lots to do. I currently work for Morton Plant North Bay which is an hour drive for me, but , well well well worth it. I love the hospital, co workers, and the pay isnt bad either. Morton Plant is part of Baycare, which has lots of hospitals to choose from and plenty of room for advancement.

I have done my clinicals at the Morton Plant Hospitals near Palm Harbor and Clearwater. And I live in Clearwater. I just started working at St. Joseph's in Tampa, and I love it! They've really worked hard to make everything nicer and cleaner in the past couple years. Many people said the place sucked but now it's really nice. If I were you as long as the hospital is Baycare :)

We call ourselves Tampanian. Other names Tampan, Tampi, Tampanese lol.
I would say University Hospital is the don't even think about it place. But I am coming from a patient point of view.
I stay in Central Tampa/Tampa Heights which is right outside of downtown. My advice stay somewhere close to an interstate. I enjoy Tampa .

I am thinking of moving to the ST. Pete or Tampa area I am an LPN with experience in LTC and Home health. I am leaving a bad marriage. I will be moving from IA. just waiting for a good time to leave. any suggestions of good apartments and places to work in these areas? I am all so trying to find out the cost of a FL. LPN license.
Not sure about the cost of LPN licensure in FL, but I reacquired my RN for a cool $223. That comes at the end of an 18-page packet that didn't include the two fingerprint cards. Like everything else, send it off certified to the BON. In about a month it should arrive.
Suerte.
